Winter Storm in Columbia
Columbia, South Carolina, is gearing up for a significant winter storm expected to bring wintry temperatures and snowfall starting Tuesday. Residents are advised to prepare for dangerously cold conditions, with daytime temperatures in the 30s and nighttime lows plunging into the teens. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are anticipated, creating potential hazards on the roads. The South Carolina Department of Transportation is already taking measures to prevent ice on the roads. This winter has been notably chillier than usual, making safety precautions essential as the storm approaches.
Columbia, South Carolina, is bracing itself for a significant winter storm that is set to bring wintry temperatures and the possibility of snow to the region. Residents across South Carolina are advised to prepare for a chilly week ahead, with the National Weather Service (NWS) highlighting an increasing chance of snowfall starting on Tuesday. It’s time to bundle up and stock up on those cozy blankets!
Starting Sunday night, Columbia will be experiencing a wave of cold air that is bound to last throughout the entire week. Temperatures are predicted to soar only into the 30s during the day, while at night, they could plummet into the teens. The wind chill factor could make it feel even colder, dipping below 15 degrees overnight. Tuesday through Thursday are expected to be the coldest days, so make sure to keep warm!
From Tuesday into Wednesday, snowfall is becoming more likely, with expectations of accumulation between 1 to 3 inches in various parts of the state, particularly south of Interstate 20. Although it might look beautiful, South Carolinians are being cautiously warned about the risks such as frozen pipes and dangerous conditions for those without proper shelter. It’s vital to take all necessary precautions during this wintry weather.
For those planning to drive during this storm, caution is highly advised. Potentially hazardous conditions may arise, especially in the Midlands, Lowcountry, and Pee Dee regions, which are likely to experience the biggest impact from the incoming weather. The Upstate region may take a backseat with less snowfall expected. However, do not let your guard down if you’re in northern counties as they could see a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow depending on the temperatures.
On Wednesday, a low pressure system is predicted to sweep through, transporting precipitation to the Midlands. The temperature may drop below freezing, giving Columbia a low of around 30 degrees and a 30% chance of precipitation. Even though it’s expected to be less than half an inch of precipitation on Wednesday, localized amounts could be higher, especially if conditions turn favorable for snow.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation has already started spraying salt brine on the roads, beginning with the interstates and primary routes to prevent ice formation. With nighttime temperatures expected to hover in the 20s, black ice could become a concern, making it even more important to be careful while driving.
Daytime temperatures are projected to touch the 40s on Thursday and Friday but should rise to the 50s and even 60s over the weekend. This could be a welcome sight after a frigid week! If snowfall does occur, it would mark the third snowstorm of 2025 in the Midlands, following earlier winter storms this January that brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain. For context, earlier this month, Columbia recorded nearly an inch of snow, while some areas, like Bowman in Orangeburg County, saw up to 4 inches!
This winter has been notably chillier than what is typical for South Carolina, following unusual patterns for this time of year. January was recorded as one of the coldest months for Columbia, ranking as the 12th coldest on record and the coldest since 2014. With extremely low temperatures predicted leading into the following week, it seems that this weather is just getting started!
So, Columbia, stay warm, stay safe, and keep an eye on the weather as this winter storm approaches. Happy snow days ahead!
