As the community comes together, the focus remains on enhancing educational opportunities for students in Ware Shoals.

Celebrations and Innovations Highlight Recent Board Meeting in Ware Shoals

Ware Shoals recently witnessed a vibrant gathering as the District 51 board convened to celebrate remarkable academic successes and unveil plans for financial improvements. The meeting was filled with a palpable sense of pride as students, educators, and administrators came together to recognize outstanding accomplishments.

Honoring Student Achievements

One of the shining stars of the evening was Johana Bustos, who was celebrated for her achievement as a South Carolina Association of Teacher Assistants Region Three scholarship winner. Johana didn’t stop there – she also took home the esteemed Student Council Coalition Leadership Award during the exciting Heart of a Hornet event. Dan Crockett, the district superintendent, along with board member Shanon Calvert, expressed their delight at Johana’s exceptional contributions to student leadership.

The evening further honored diligent food service managers who tirelessly contribute to the district’s meal programs. Recognized were Sharon Mann, Elaine Edens, Tracy Cooper, and Tracey Hinton, each playing a pivotal role in ensuring students receive nourishing meals every day.

Financial Management and Strategic Moves

On the financial front, the Greenwood School District 51 trustees took significant strides. They approved a transfer of funds, cleverly moving dollars from the general account to resolve a deficit of $9,587.04 in the athletics activity account. Superintendent Dan Crockett highlighted the district’s commitment to responsible financial management during this discussion.

In terms of transparency, the board also gave a nod to enhancing tracking of revenues and expenditures by greenlighting a new high school activity report structure. Notably, the athletic activity account faced a staggering deficit of $13,845.69 back in February; thankfully, the strategic fund transfer helped to amend that situation.

Curriculum Enhancements

Exciting changes are on the horizon for students as the board approved new math textbooks designed to align with state standards. Additionally, three new courses will be introduced at the middle school level: Journalism and Yearbook, Robotics, and STEAM. This move aims to spark interest and enrich students’ educational experiences in these crucial areas.

Spotlighted at the meeting, Wylie McCullough, a third-grader, was celebrated as the 2025 Spelling Bee Champion. This enthusiastic young scholar successfully represented Ware Shoals Primary. Similarly, Jolene Allen, a seventh grader, was recognized for her skills in winning the Ware Shoals Middle School Spelling Bee.

A Meaningful Tribute

A touching moment of the evening was the introduction of the Evan Bridges Memorial Scholarship, created to honor a beloved 2019 graduate who unfortunately passed away in 2024. This scholarship, aimed to support committed student-athletes, will provide a primary award of up to $2,500 along with two smaller awards, ensuring that Evan’s legacy continues to inspire others.

Investing in the Future

In an effort to modernize facilities, the board approved a request for architectural services with a budget capped at $15,000. These updates are expected to enhance the educational environment significantly. Furthermore, discussions were held about aligning the math curriculum with state education changes, particularly for rising ninth graders who will now need six credits to move to sophomore status.

On a bright note, Braden Wilson, an exceptional eighth-grade social studies teacher, received the significant accolade of 2025 South Carolina Teacher of the Year. This honor, shared during a live event at the Governor’s Mansion, celebrates educators who make a difference and inspire students. Braden’s recognition reflects the quality of education being fostered within Ware Shoals and the surrounding areas.

As the meeting wrapped up, attendees left with a renewed sense of community, ambition, and the promise of a brighter educational future for all students in Ware Shoals District 51.
