It’s been 30 years since the small town of Union, South Carolina, found itself at the center of a heart-wrenching story that captured the nation’s attention. Former Solicitor Tommy Pope shed some light on the situation, stating, “The more she told the story, the more inconsistencies surfaced.” The pressure from the media and law enforcement proved too much for Susan to maintain her fabrications.

Eventually, Sheriff Howard Wells, a family friend, confronted Susan with the inconsistencies. It was then that she confessed in a heartbreaking handwritten letter dated November 3, 1994. The following day, the bodies of Michael and Alexander were discovered in their car seats at the bottom of John D. Long Lake.

Justice Served?

Charged with two counts of murder, Susan’s trial took place in 1995. While the prosecution initially sought the death penalty, a jury convicted her and sentenced her to life in prison. However, a crucial piece of information remained hidden from the jury: at that time, life sentences in South Carolina didn’t mean life without the possibility of parole.

“It didn’t mean what they thought it meant,” explained Pope. Soon after the trial, the law changed to enforce life sentences without the chance of parole, but unfortunately for the victims of Smith’s actions, those changes came too late.

Parole Hearing Looms

Fast forward to today, and Susan Smith is eligible for parole, with her hearing scheduled for mid-November 2024. The date brings a mix of emotions, especially for David Smith, who expressed his fear and anxiety over the prospect of facing the woman who took his sons’ lives. “It scares me because I don’t want to see her. It makes me nervous, and I’m just dreading the whole possibility of seeing her again,” he shared.

As the community reflects on the dark legacy of this tragedy, many are eager to see justice served. David Smith plans to be present at the parole hearing, though he is uncertain of what he will say. “Just 30 years for taking two lives, and it was done maliciously, with malice and forethought. No, 30 years is not near enough for what she did,” he said passionately.
