The small city of Mauldin, South Carolina, is forever marked by a tragic event that occurred more than two decades ago. On Halloween night in 1997, a hardworking mother of three, Irene Grainger Graves, lost her life in a devastating robbery that left her children and community in shock. As we look back at this painful chapter in the city’s history, we remember not just the crime but the indomitable spirit of a mother who worked tirelessly for her kids.
Irene was a devoted single parent who juggled three jobs at Kmart, Bi-Lo, and Speedway to support her family. Her children—Arte, Jeremy, and Ensley—were her world, and she made it her mission to provide them with opportunities, whether that meant supporting their passions in dance or cheerleading. Despite her mother’s concerns that she was working too hard and suggested she consider welfare, Irene pressed on, determined not to let her children feel deprived due to her status as a single parent.
On that fateful night of November 1, 1997, Irene was working the overnight shift at Speedway. Alongside a coworker, Mary Beuhner, the pair were discussing who would venture outside to fill the ice machine when their lives took a horrific turn. Two masked men, Freddie Owens and Stephen Golden, entered the store with guns in hand, demanding money.
After Irene complied with their demands and opened the cash register, the situation escalated. According to court records, when Irene informed them that the safe was jammed, Owens made a shocking decision—he shot her in the head. He and his accomplice fled with just $37.29, leaving the store— and the lives of Irene’s loved ones—forever changed.
The aftermath of Irene’s death was nothing short of tragic. A victim witness advocate, Juliana Christy, was called to deliver the heart-wrenching news to Irene’s children. When Ensley, only ten years old at the time, asked where her mother was, Christy had to say the words no child should ever hear: “She has gone to heaven.” Jeremy, only a year older than Ensley, experienced immense pain yet tried to put on a brave face for his younger siblings.
Irene’s family rallied together to support the children. They moved in with Irene’s mother, Ira Grainger. “Their mother was all they had. She was their lives,” Christy testified during the ensuing trials. The children faced nightmares and lived in a silence that spoke volumes about their grief.
The man convicted for Irene’s murder, Freddie Owens, now 46 years old, is set to face execution by lethal injection. His actions on that Halloween night not only cost a loving mother her life but also forever altered the lives of three children who relied on her for everything. The Speedway where the tragedy unfolded has since closed, a somber reminder of the violence that occurred there.
Irene was laid to rest six days after her murder at Old Field Baptist Church in Mullins, where her family and friends gathered to pay their respects. Today, she would have been 68 years old. Her youngest daughter, Ensley, now a mother herself, recently shared heartfelt memories of her mother on social media, saying, “Every day is still tough without you. You would have had the most amazing time with your grandbabies.”
Despite the darkness surrounding her passing, Irene Grainger Graves is remembered as a dedicated and loving mother who would stop at nothing to provide for her family. Her story serves as an enduring reminder of resilience in the face of unspeakable loss. In a community filled with memories of her work ethic and unwavering love, Irene’s legacy lives on through her children and family.
