Exciting Week in High School Sports in Houston

This past week was an electrifying one for high school sports in Houston, as numerous state champions were crowned in the initial UIL Fall tournaments. At the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio, the stakes were high as Brazoswood (26-2) and Foster (30-0) faced off in the 6A Girls Water Polo Finals. After winning their respective semifinals, Brazoswood defeated Southlake Carroll with a score of 14-8, while Foster took down Boerne-Champion with an impressive 23-4 victory.

The championship showdown on Saturday was a closely contested battle that went into overtime, with Brazoswood ultimately winning 11-9. This victory marked the Buccaneers’ first-ever state title, disrupting Foster’s chance for a third consecutive championship. In recognition of their performances, Mallory Kesler from Brazoswood was named State MVP. Others receiving the honor of being on the 2024 All-Tournament team include Kinley Niles (Foster), Gigi Lower (Brazoswood), and Cassidy Jacks (Foster), among others.

In the boys’ category, Clear Creek showed dominance by defeating Foster with a score of 19-12. Marcus also secured their place in the finals by beating Boerne-Champion 22-16. Ultimately, Clear Creek found success in the finals against Marcus, claiming a decisive 14-10 victory. Jamie De Zwart from Clear Creek took home the State MVP award, and the All-Tournament team included players from various schools.

Switching gears to tennis, the Baylor University Tennis Center hosted several teams battling it out for gold. In the Class 4A bracket, Canyon Randall secured the championship with a 10-4 victory over Willis Point. Meanwhile, Frisco Centennial took home the 5A title by defeating Abilene Wylie 10-2, marking their second straight crown. Lastly, Round Rock Westwood continued their winning streak by easily besting Seven Lakes 10-3, earning them their fifth title in seven years.

In a thrilling high school football game at Turner Stadium in Humble, North Shore edged out Atascocita with a score of 27-23. Despite the loss, Atascocita remains ranked No. 2 in the VYPE Class 6A Rankings. Other notable football matchups saw Katy defeating a ranked Paetow, while Cypress Ranch narrowly beat Cypress Woods.

In conclusion, high school sports in Houston have provided thrilling moments, with athletes showcasing their skills and determination. As the season progresses, fans eagerly await what’s next for these talented young competitors.
