Cherokee County, S.C. – The aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby has left a trail of destruction across the Palmetto State. Residents in Cherokee County woke up to numerous reports of storm damage, including downed trees and powerlines.
One of the significant impacts of the storm is the flooding, which has led to the closure of Lake View Motor Speedway in Nichols. The speedway announced on Facebook that they were canceling all races due to the track being submerged, with water levels reaching the picnic table benches.
Additionally, on Thursday, a bridge on Carolina Drive Extension in Spartanburg County was closed due to rising floodwaters, further complicating travel in the area.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management reported several incidents of trees falling and damaging properties. A notable incident occurred on Montgomery Drive where a tree crashed onto a house, yet no injuries have been reported so far.
Massive power outages have affected over 800 residents in Spartanburg County, while restoration efforts are ongoing in Greenwood County where power has been restored for impacted households.
As Debby moved north, it began to weaken and has been downgraded to a depression. Despite this, the National Weather Service confirmed seven tornadoes spawned from the storm, highlighting its severe impact as it traversed through the state.
The weather is expected to clear up with temperatures rising as we head into Friday, providing some respite and an opportunity for recovery and cleanup activities.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor the situation.
