Laurens Co. Skunk Tests Positive for Rabies; One Person Exposed
Laurens County, S.C. – The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a skunk tested positive for rabies in Laurens County, leading to one person being exposed. The incident occurred near Fairview Road and Grandwood Boulevard in Fountain Inn.

The positive rabies test was confirmed by the DPH on August 2. The individual who was exposed to the skunk has been referred to their local healthcare provider for immediate care. Rabies exposure can be treated effectively if timely medical attention is sought, so there is no need to panic if exposed.

Rabies Program director, Terri McCollister, emphasized the importance of keeping pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations. “Keeping your pets vaccinated is the easiest way to protect you and your family from this deadly virus,” she said. She also advised giving wild and stray animals plenty of space as rabies can be transmitted by any mammal.

This skunk is the second animal in Laurens County to test positive for rabies in 2024. Across South Carolina, there have been 46 reported cases of rabid animals this year.
