Laurens Co. Skunk Tests Positive for Rabies; One Person Exposed

Laurens County, S.C. – A skunk tested positive for rabies in Laurens County, bringing attention to a crucial public health issue in the community. The animal was found near Fairview Road and Grandwood Boulevard in Fountain Inn, S.C., and was confirmed to carry rabies on August 2.

Exposure Details

The skunk’s rabies status has led to the exposure of one individual, who has since been referred to their local healthcare provider for preventive measures. Rabies, although dangerous, is 100% treatable if timely care is sought. If you or your pets have had any potential contact with the skunk, it’s essential to inform the public health office in Greenwood immediately at (864) 942-3600.

Importance of Vaccinations

Terri McCollister, the director of the Rabies Program, emphasized the importance of keeping pets vaccinated: “Keeping your pets up to date on their rabies vaccination is the easiest way to protect you and your family from this deadly virus. Any mammal, whether wild or domesticated, can carry and transmit the disease to people or pets.” This statement underscores the vital need to give wild and stray animals plenty of space.

Current Rabies Situation in Laurens County

This skunk represents the second animal in Laurens County to test positive for rabies in 2024. Statewide, there have been 46 cases of rabid animals reported this year. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and precaution to protect public health.
