One More Thing: “The Lion King, Jr.” Shines Bright

In recent news, Newberry has also been buzzing about the dazzling productions of “The Lion King, Jr.” that showcased the talent of 120 students from the Newberry County School District. These performances, which took place at the historic Ritz Theatre from March 16 to March 19, were a hit, with every single show selling out!

The energy in the theater was palpable, and audience members had a lot to say about just how thrilling the performances were. The magic of theater brought together students and families, making the experience even more special. Many praised the excitement and enthusiasm of the cast, drawing everyone into the heartwarming story.

A Collaborative Effort

All credit is due to the incredible teamwork behind the curtain. With the guidance of directors who included Laura Clark, Hannah Collins, and Ruth McDaniels, the students brought the show to life with passion and creativity. Notably, the production emphasized the importance of arts education in nurturing not just talent, but also community, confidence, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

As part of the production, an accompanying student art show highlighted beautiful visual artwork celebrating African culture, artists, and traditions. The arts teachers across the district played a significant role in supporting the production through their work with makeup, hair, costumes, and beyond, further showcasing the community’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

Lynn Cary, the assistant superintendent for instruction, aptly noted how significant it was for the entire district to come together in this collaborative effort, involving students from every school. It’s heartening to see that the arts continue to be a focal point in enhancing educational experiences for the youth in Newberry.
