Woodruff Elementary Offers Essential Tips for Parents as Students Return to School

Spartanburg County, S.C.—August 12, 2024

As the new school year kicks off in Spartanburg School District 4, Woodruff Elementary School has shared some helpful insights for parents to ensure their children’s success. Returning to school after a long summer break can be a daunting experience, but with some straightforward steps, the transition can be smoother for everyone involved.

Fostering Communication

According to Camille Robinson, the assistant principal at Woodruff Elementary, the key is to keep open lines of communication between home and school. “It starts at home and we need to remember that as parents,” she said. “Make sure the lines of communication between school and home are open. We’re all on the same team, and our number one priority is the student.”

Prepping the Night Before

One of the practical tips shared involves preparing for school the night before. Teachers recommend ensuring book bags are packed, outfits are laid out, and screens are turned off well in advance of bedtime. Giada Parris, the principal of Woodruff Elementary and a parent herself, advised, “As a mom of a fourth grader myself, I encourage you to make sure your little ones go to bed early and eat a good breakfast. I know a lot of them have had a lot of screen time over the summer. We want to make sure we’re limiting that, especially right before they go to bed.”

Making School a Positive Experience

The school also emphasized the importance of fostering a positive experience for children. Assistant Principal Jami Guker shared, “Make sure you encourage them to do the best that they can every single day. I think a lot of times kids come to school and they’re worried and they’re anxious, but just encourage them every single day.”

Additional Tips

It’s not just about academic preparedness. “Encouraging them to do their best and making school a positive experience can go a long way,” Parris added. “Let’s work together to make this school year a great one for our children.”

With these simple yet effective tips, parents in Spartanburg County can help their children transition smoothly back into the school routine. Here’s to a successful and enjoyable school year ahead!
