Community Pays Tribute to Phillip Roberts, Dedicated District Employee Who Passed Away by Suicide

Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved District Employee Phillip Roberts

In the charming city of Laurens, South Carolina, the community is coming together to grieve the unexpected loss of a beloved member of the Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55). Phillip Roberts, a dedicated school employee, passed away by suicide on Friday, October 18, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service and compassion that touched the lives of many.

Phillip’s Background and Contributions

Phillip Roberts was not just any employee; he was a highly trained and experienced public servant with more than 26 years in emergency operations. His career included a variety of roles that showcased his remarkable skills in fire prevention, occupational health, and safety. He bravely served as a Lieutenant with the Simpsonville Fire Department, a member of South Carolina Task Force One, Fire Chief of the Waterloo Fire Department, and others. Most notably, he served as a Combat Medic in the United States Army, where he faced the traumas of war, including being shot while attempting to rescue a fellow soldier who tragically died in his arms.

Roberts joined LCSD 55 in April 2022 as a fire and safety vendor, conducting monthly school compliance checks to ensure that safety standards were met. He took on the role of Energy Specialist on February 1, 2023, where he passionately led energy conservation efforts within the district through the Cenergistic Conservation Program. Under his guidance and hard work, LCSD 55 worked diligently towards energy efficiency, leading to remarkable net savings of $138,609.65 in March 2024 and $297,584.43 in July 2024. His impact was not only financial; he educated and motivated staff and students alike on the importance of being mindful about energy use.

Expressions of Grief and Remembrance

As news of his passing spread, many colleagues and friends shared heartfelt memories and expressions of sorrow. Jim Lollis, LCSD 55 Chief Financial Officer, spoke fondly of Phillip, stating, “Phillip’s skill set uniquely qualified him for his position, and through his efforts, the district quickly found success… He will be deeply missed as a co-worker and friend.” Lollis went on to emphasize how irreplaceable Phillip was not just as an employee but as a devoted Christian, husband, and father.

Dr. Rhett Harris, LCSD 55 Assistant Superintendent, echoed these sentiments, saying, “Phillip was a friend and colleague who will be greatly missed. His devotion to his work, attention to detail, and matchless energy will be impossible to fully replace.”

Superintendent Dr. Jody Penland shared his own deepest sentiments: “It is heartbreaking that his lifelong service of helping others and our community was cut short due to his mental health struggles.” He urged the community to keep Phillip’s family—his wife and teenage daughter—in their thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

A Call for Awareness

The tragedy of Phillip Roberts’ passing highlights the pressing need for awareness and support surrounding mental health issues, especially in high-stress professions. Phillip’s battles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) remind us that no matter how strong or capable someone may appear, they can be facing unseen struggles. It’s essential to foster environments where individuals feel comfortable seeking help and sharing their experiences.

This loss is a reminder of the strength and courage it takes to reach out and support one another, emphasizing the need for open conversations about mental health in our communities.

Remembering Phillip

As Laurens County School District 55 moves forward, the memory of Phillip Roberts will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His commitment to excellence, unwavering dedication to service, and genuine care for those around him have left a profound impact that will not easily fade. As the community gathers to remember him, they do so with the hope that his legacy will inspire others to continue his work in fostering safe and supportive environments for all.
