Portland, OR – What a night it was for the Oregon Ducks! In a thrilling showdown against Penn State, the Ducks fought hard and emerged victorious with a 45-37 win in the Big Ten title game. Talk about a nail-biter! This victory not only secured Oregon’s undefeated season but also guaranteed them the top seed in the upcoming College Football Playoff.
The star of the night? Wide receiver Tez Johnson. This kid was on fire, racking up an impressive 11 catches for 181 yards and a touchdown. His standout moment came in the third quarter when he caught a 48-yard pass from QB Dillon Gabriel, turning it into a stunning touchdown that extended Oregon’s lead to 38-24. It was a play that had the crowd on their feet shouting, “TEZ. IS. GONE!”
While Penn State made a valiant effort to close the gap, they just couldn’t keep pace with the Oregon offense, which was clicking on all cylinders. Even when the Nittany Lions managed to cut the deficit to eight points at the start of the fourth quarter, the Ducks answered back with a lengthy drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run by Jordan James. That put the Ducks back up by two scores, taking the game to 45-30 with just over seven minutes left.
As the clock ticked down, Penn State clawed back to narrow Oregon’s lead to one score with only a few minutes remaining. But the Ducks proved too strong. The Nittany Lions had a chance to mount a game-winning drive but fell short when Nikko Reed snagged an interception on a deep pass. Talk about sealing the deal!
Now, with their win over the Nittany Lions, the Ducks stand proud at 13-0 for the season. They’re the only undefeated team at the top level of college football and have consistently held the No. 1 rank in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Ducks are gearing up to face the winner of the No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
As for Penn State, this loss marked another tough outing for coach James Franklin, with 19 losses to top-10 teams in 22 games. Nonetheless, they’ll still be heading to the College Football Playoff as well; the real question is where they will land in the seeding. Will they slip below Notre Dame, who comes in with an 11-1 record? Seems like a battle between seeding, but it’s safe to say Penn State will host a first-round game.
Quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a great night too, completing 22 of 32 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns. While his chances of snagging the Heisman might be slim with competition like Colorado’s Travis Hunter, he’s certainly made a case for himself to at least be in attendance at the ceremony. A career day for both Johnson and Gabriel definitely puts them on the map as Oregon prepares for the playoffs!
So, as fans celebrate Oregon’s incredible season, there’s a whole lot to look forward to in the playoffs. Will the Ducks carry this momentum and go all the way? Only time will tell, but for now, they’re riding high, undefeated and ready to make history!
