This week, Orangeburg is set to be the center of attention as several high school football teams compete in the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) state championships. The games will take place at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, with matchups starting Thursday, December 12 and continuing through Saturday, December 14.
The matchups feature some of the best teams in the state, many of which are undefeated or have strong winning records. The tournament opener is between Clinton High School (11-2) and Barnwell High School (13-1) on Thursday at 2 p.m., followed by a game between Abbeville High School (12-1) and Cross High School (11-2) at 7:30 p.m.
Friday’s games will be just as thrilling. The first game features Dutch Fork High School (12-0) facing Summerville High School (13-0) at 2 p.m. Later in the evening, Westside High School (13-0) will take on South Florence High School (11-3) at 7:30 p.m. Both matchups feature teams that have put in a remarkable performance throughout the season.
On Saturday, Northwestern High School (13-0) will compete against Irmo High School (12-1) at 6 p.m. The final game includes Belton-Honea Path High School (13-1) against Oceanside Collegiate (10-3) at noon.
This year’s championship games also have historical significance. Abbeville is aiming for its 12th state title and is known for its strong legacy, winning championships throughout several decades, including 2022, 2020, and as far back as 1971. In contrast, Dutch Fork seeks its 9th title, having won multiple championships over the past decade.
Summerville brings a rich tradition to the field, boasting a total of 12 state championships, the last one being in 1998. Meanwhile, Clinton hopes to add to its eight titles, a dream that has persisted since its last win in 2009.
