Benson High School Football Season Cut Short

OMAHA, Neb. — Benson High School’s football season has come to an early end after the cancellation of its last two games. The school’s administration cited low participation numbers as the reason for this decision. Conversations within the community have revealed that the trend of players transferring out of Benson is a key factor in these declining numbers.

This situation has ignited discussions about the impact of open enrollment policies in Nebraska. Many students have the ability to attend schools outside their local district, which is commonly referred to as “option enrollment” or “school choice”. Just two years ago, Benson lost 17 players to Central High School, leading to conversations in the neighborhood about the implications of switching schools for sports.

During a recent discussion with the Fiscus family, who serves as co-presidents of the Benson Bunnies Booster Club, community spirit was evident. “I love the school, I love the faculty, I love the staff,” said Stacey Fiscus. However, they now face the reality of having one fewer team to support this season. “We struggle to play those teams that have the high talent when they pulled them from us,” she added.

Experts note that this situation is becoming more common across Nebraska. Participation levels in many high school sports do not reflect the traditional size of schools anymore. Nate Neuhaus from the Nebraska School Activities Association acknowledged that while he could not comment solely on Benson’s case, he recognizes that many programs are facing similar challenges in filling their roster spots.

“Participation numbers aren’t what they used to be,” Neuhaus explained. He indicated that factors like cultural shifts and community engagement have transformed how families view their ties to local schools and teams over the years. “Things look different now than they did 5, 10, or even 15 years ago.”

While the situation seems challenging, the Fiscuses are optimistic about the future of Benson High School. “And then move forward together, not opposing each other,” Brandon Fiscus expressed. As discussions surrounding option enrollment continue to gain traction among school districts and educational bodies, efforts are underway to address the issues facing schools like Benson.
