Newberry, S.C. Community Unites Amid Ongoing Power Outages Following Storm

Newberry, S.C. Faces Ongoing Power Outages

It’s been a challenging week for families in Newberry, South Carolina, as widespread power outages have affected the community since a recent storm passed through. Even though things are starting to get back to normal for some, thousands are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm. It’s been a tough ride, but the spirit among the residents and the help from local first responders and volunteers has been truly heartwarming.

Storm Results in Major Power Disruptions

When the storm hit, it knocked out power to more than 14,000 households. According to the local utility provider, Newberry Electric Cooperative, about 9,500 homes have seen their power restored, but that leaves a significant number—around 4,500 customers—still waiting for crews to get their service back up and running. The electricity workers are truly putting their best foot forward, working around the clock to restore power, but it’s no easy feat. Newberry County Sheriff, Lee Foster, explained the process, stating, “When one of those poles goes out, it’s a minimum of three hours to replace the pole.” It’s clear that restoring power is a logistical challenge that requires time and effort.

Community Coming Together

In the meantime, local first responders and devoted volunteers have stepped in to provide much-needed assistance to those affected by the outage. Supplies including food and water have been distributed from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office to ensure everyone has access to basic necessities. Sheriff Foster mentioned, “This is day 6.5 without power and we still have a lot of people without power.” The determined team has committed to continuing these distributions until all residents have their electricity restored.

One such resident, Dantoni Thompson, was among the many who visited the makeshift supplies station. Despite having lost power himself, Dantoni was there to pick up items not only for himself but also to help his neighbors. He shared some of the challenges the storm brought, saying, “It was rough; we had no electricity and no power.” However, his selflessness shone through as he mentioned, “I’m helping my neighbors out. I have an elderly neighbor on one side of me, and he just got his power restored not too long ago.”

A Helping Hand from the Community

Stories like Dantoni’s are popping up all over Newberry, reflecting the genuine desire to look out for each other during tough times. People are proving that even when the situation could feel overwhelming, they can still find ways to lend a hand. Whether it’s sharing a warm meal or assisting someone with recovery efforts, the community’s heart is undeniable.

Looking Ahead

As the days go by, crews are making significant strides, and the hope is that everyone will be back online soon. Sheriff Foster reassured those still without power that the distribution of food and water will persist until every single resident feels secure and nourished. It’s a testament to the strength and resolve of Newberry, as neighbors join together to tackle the aftermath of the storm.

While some families are finally seeing their power restored, many are still facing challenges. Community support makes it easier for residents to get through these programs with resilience. The people of Newberry are not just enduring; they are thriving together, helping one another out, and reminding everyone how important it is to stand united in the face of adversity.
