Newberry Occupational Therapist Receives Prestigious Clinical Education Award of Distinction

Newberry Celebrates Recognition of Local Occupational Therapist

NEWBERRY — Exciting news is emerging from Newberry, as Jessica Newton, a dedicated Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) at Newberry County Memorial Hospital, has been honored with the esteemed Clinical Education Award of Distinction from Presbyterian College. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of Occupational Therapy, specifically those who have shown exceptional clinical excellence and effective evidence-based practices while mentoring Doctor of Occupational Therapy students.

A Journey of Compassion and Service

With an impressive 13 years of experience under her belt, Newton has spent almost nine of those years serving the community at Newberry Hospital. In her current role as the Director of Occupational Therapy, she oversees inpatient adult rehabilitation and provides invaluable support to patients navigating their recovery processes. “I’ve worked in all areas of Occupational Therapy, but I truly love the family atmosphere here at Newberry Hospital,” Newton shared.

Passion for Independence and Quality of Life

Newton’s decision to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy stems from her desire to help individuals lead fulfilling and independent lives. She puts a strong emphasis on improving her patients’ quality of life, ensuring they are equipped with the skills they need for day-to-day living. Newton is also fervently invested in expanding the Stepping Stones Pediatric program at Newberry Hospital, catering specifically to younger patients in need of therapeutic support.

Education and Mentorship

Currently, Newton is enrolled in virtual classes at MUSC, transitioning from a master’s to a doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy, with plans to complete her studies in May 2025. Her dedication to education doesn’t stop with her own pursuits; she has played a crucial role in mentoring upcoming Occupational Therapy students for over a decade. Additionally, she actively participates in educational panels, including a recent session at Presbyterian College where she answered students’ questions about the field.

Each year, Newton opens the doors of Newberry Hospital to students from Presbyterian College, welcoming them for a 12-week clinical rotation. During this time, she provides hands-on training, particularly through sensory integration labs aimed at pediatric patients. It’s a fulfilling experience that allows her to share her passion for the profession and prepare the next generation of Occupational Therapists.

A Heartfelt Recognition

Newton expressed her surprise and gratitude upon receiving the Clinical Education Award during the graduation ceremony at Presbyterian College. It was a moment that not only celebrated her achievements but also highlighted her commitment to the field and her students. “I was very honored and surprised to receive the award,” she said.

Community Engagement

Living in Newberry with her husband Brett, who coaches football at Strom Thurmond High School, and their two children, Avery and Ayden, Newton remains active in the local community. She firmly believes in fostering connections between Newberry Hospital and educational institutions like Presbyterian College to promote Occupational Therapy Awareness. Each year, during Occupational Therapy Month, she collaborates with the college to provide informative sessions at the hospital, helping to raise awareness and encourage interest in the field.

Innovative Programs for Young Patients

In partnership with the Go Baby Go Program, Presbyterian College has taken steps to adapt power cars for pediatric patients, allowing them to experience mobility. Two power cars were donated to families, highlighting the collaborative effort to bring joy and independence to young patients in the community.

Newton’s heartfelt dedication and passion for Occupational Therapy truly shine through her work. With her ongoing education, community involvement, and mentorship, she proves to be an invaluable asset not just to Newberry Hospital, but to the entire Newberry community.
