NEWBERRY — The excitement was palpable last week as the Newberry High School varsity girls’ basketball team kicked off their 2024-25 season. Fans filled the stands for the home opener on Friday, December 6th, where the lady Bulldogs faced off against the lady Yellow Jackets of Union County. The game didn’t disappoint as the bulldogs secured a solid victory with a score of 42-29, bringing their season record to 2-1.
The game began a bit slowly, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. It was a defensive battle during the first quarter, and together, they managed to rack up only a total of 14 points. The quarter ended with both teams tied at 7-7, which set the stage for an interesting matchup.
As the second quarter rolled around, the lady Yellow Jackets found a bit more momentum and outscored the lady Bulldogs 10-4. By halftime, the score was 17-11 in favor of Union County, leaving the Bulldogs eager to regroup for the second half.
Coming out of the break, the lady Bulldogs were determined to turn things around. One player who shined bright during this crucial period was Daizee Williams, a junior guard who absolutely stole the spotlight as she scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. Her energy on the court was contagious, rallying her teammates and the crowd alike.
Williams particularly lit it up in the third quarter, scoring nine points and helping the Bulldogs take control of the game. By the end of the third quarter, Newberry had surged ahead with a score of 29-21. They never looked back from that point.
The lady Bulldogs showed their strength not just in scoring, but also in defense throughout the final quarter. They held the lady Yellow Jackets to just eight points in the last stretch, showcasing their ability to clamp down on the opposition. Tamaria Wadsworth also made a strong contribution to the game, finishing with eight points, all scored in the second half, further solidifying Newberry’s lead.
With this solid win under their belt, the lady Bulldogs are ready to hit the road for upcoming games. They will face Chapin on December 10, followed by a home game against Irmo on December 11. The anticipation is building as they prepare for part one of their big rivalry showdown against Mid-Carolina on December 13.
This early season action has gotten fans excited for what lies ahead. The bulldogs’ determination and teamwork have been on full display, promising a bright future for the season. Let’s cheer them on as they continue to hit the courts!
