A view of lane reductions and construction work on I-26 in Newberry County.
Newberry County, SC, is set to experience significant traffic changes on I-26 Westbound starting April 28 due to crucial bridge repairs initiated by SCDOT. Lane reductions at the Palmetto Trail and Indian Creek bridges will limit traffic to a single lane until the end of May, likely causing delays. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes, especially those with wide loads exceeding 10 feet. In addition, nearby Saluda County is also undergoing bridge repairs with detour routes available. The SCDOT urges everyone to remain alert and follow safety guidelines during the roadwork.
Attention, residents and travelers in Newberry County, South Carolina! Starting on Monday, April 28, brace yourselves for some notable changes on I-26 Westbound as the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) kicks off bridge repairs. This construction will reduce traffic to a single lane, and it may not be an easy ride.
The lane reductions will specifically take place over two critical areas: the Palmetto Trail, located at mile marker 83, and the bridge over Indian Creek at mile marker 65. If you often use I-26 for your daily commute or travel plans, keep in mind that these single lane closures are expected to stick around until the very end of May.
As you navigate these road changes, it’s essential to stay alert. Drivers are advised to expect some delays, so if it’s at all possible, consider seeking alternate routes. Depending on when you’re traveling, road conditions could make your drive longer than usual, and nobody wants that!
Wide loads that exceed 10 feet in width will face additional challenges. If you’re operating one of those, you’ll need to exit the interstate at SC 202 and follow a signed detour route. Make sure to plan ahead if you find yourself in this situation to avoid unnecessary frustration.
In the midst of all this roadwork, SCDOT places a strong emphasis on safety. Slow down and pay close attention as you drive near these work zones. The last thing anyone wants is an accident, especially while trying to get from point A to point B during this construction.
If you find yourself needing to navigate around the S.C. 121 bridge closure, detour routes have been set up. For those coming from the north, you can take Exit 74 onto Highway 34, then hop onto US-176 to get back to 121. For drivers heading south, taking Exit 60 onto 121, then 76, will guide you back to Highway 34. Community members are encouraged to remain patient as the repairs take place, and remember that this is all for improved infrastructure in the long run.
