NEWBERRY — It’s hard to believe the effects of Hurricane Helene could have been so severe. Many of us originally thought we were just going to experience a bit of heavy rain and some gusty winds. However, the aftermath told a different story. The heavy rain was paired with strong winds, leaving many residents without power for days. Unfortunately, that also meant cleaning out spoiled food from refrigerators, a task most would gladly avoid.
People scrambled to make things work with generators while attempting to keep electronics charged. Medical equipment needed power, and finding fresh meals became a challenge. As we fought these difficulties, something incredible started to happen—the Newberry community came together in a display of unity and support.
Your local updates on social media probably kept you in the loop during that hectic time. From school district announcements to available shelters, the flow of information was crucial. Those updates were not just about logistics; they highlighted the heartwarming efforts of individuals and organizations trying to lend a helping hand. Various community events popped up, offering free meals and water, proving that even in challenging times, there is strength in togetherness.
Once it was safe, the efforts continued with a significant community event. The Jeffrey and Harriet Lampkin Foundation collaborated with the Newberry County NAACP and Jeffrey Lampkin’s Country Boy Kitchen to host the Community Cares Giveaway on September 29. This event was held in the former Big Lots parking lot, and the excitement was palpable as the clock approached 1 PM.
Lines began forming well before the official kickoff. In fact, I was fortunate enough to capture a time-lapse video of the line stretching nearly to Harbor Freight. The eagerness on people’s faces was truly heartwarming, as neighbors came out to help one another through this tough time.
It’s important to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers and organizations who stepped up in this time of need. While the Community Cares event was just one of many held throughout Newberry County, every single act of kindness mattered. Thank you to the selfless individuals who took the time to help others! Your efforts did not go unnoticed.
We also owe a massive thank you to our linemen and first responders. Many worked tirelessly to restore power and address emergencies, often under challenging conditions. The dedication exhibited by local heroes, alongside those who traveled from far and wide to assist, is a beacon of hope for all of us.
As Newberry residents, we find strength in our village, much like the adage that says, “It takes a village.” During trying times, it’s refreshing to witness how everyone pulls together. It’s as if we’re stitched together into this beautiful tapestry of compassion and generosity.
Living here all my life, I can attest to the incredible spirit that resides in our community. When hardship strikes, we don’t just look out for ourselves; we extend our hands to our neighbors. It’s a refreshing reminder of the goodness in humanity, and it leaves a lasting impression.
Let’s keep that spirit of community alive! There’s no denying that the world can use more kindness, and Newberry has shown just how powerful we can be when united. Whether through organizing events, volunteering, or offering a warm meal to someone in need, each action counts.
In conclusion, as Newberry heals and moves forward from Hurricane Helene, let’s remember to stand together, look out for each other, and continue to spread the goodness. Every little bit we do adds up to something much larger.
