Students and faculty gather to honor the legacy of Dr. Scherrens at Newberry College.
The Newberry College community mourns the passing of Dr. Maurice “Morrie” Scherrens, its cherished president, who dedicated years to the growth of the institution. His leadership brought forth numerous academic programs and athletic opportunities, enriching the lives of students. Now, an interim president has been appointed as the college prepares to honor Scherrens’ lasting legacy.
Newberry, South Carolina, is mourning the loss of a beloved leader, Dr. Maurice “Morrie” Scherrens, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 76. Surrounded by his family, including his devoted wife Sandy, Scherrens left this world peacefully after valiantly battling illness, although the specifics have not been disclosed. His absence is already felt deeply by the entire Newberry College community.
Dr. Scherrens joined Newberry College as its president in 2012 and during his time there, he made an indelible mark on the institution. Under his leadership, the college not only saw substantial growth and expansion but also achieved notable recognition in various areas. He was a visionary who understood the importance of adapting and evolving to meet the needs of students in today’s ever-changing academic landscape.
The impressive academic initiatives introduced during his presidency include 13 new undergraduate degree programs. Among these was a pioneering bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy, a significant addition as it was the only program of its kind in South Carolina. The college thrived not just academically but also in its athletic development, unveiling new sports such as field hockey, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s lacrosse, women’s triathlon, and women’s rugby. These introductions ensured that students had an enriching and diverse college experience.
Dr. Scherrens’ educational credentials show his dedication to lifelong learning and leadership in academia. He obtained a Doctorate of Education from the University of South Carolina and earned both his undergraduate degree and an MBA from Central Michigan University. Adding to his impressive resume, he also held a Doctor of Law degree from George Washington University. Prior to making waves at Newberry, he served as the senior vice president and chief operating officer at George Mason University, where he honed his skills in higher education administration.
Following Dr. Scherrens’ passing, the Newberry College Board of Trustees swiftly appointed Dr. David Harpool as interim president. Dr. Harpool has been with Newberry College since 2022 and was already stepping in as acting president due to Scherrens’ ongoing illness. The trustees have expressed their confidence in Harpool’s ability to guide the college during this challenging time, ensuring a smooth transition as the community adjusts to the loss of their esteemed leader.
