Newark, NY – In an exciting display of skill and perseverance, the Newark Reds took down the Wayne Central Eagles with a 2-1 victory in the Section V Class A quarterfinals on Thursday evening at Newark High School. The win propels Newark, ranked No. 3, into the semifinals of the tournament.
The match kicked off with mostly sunny skies turning cloudy as the game progressed. Players from both teams battled it out on the field with temperatures nearing 60°F and a light breeze. The first half saw Wayne Central draw first blood when senior Avery Bustamante-Seadeek scored a fluke goal. Bustamante-Seadeek tried a long shot from about 20 yards out that ended up being a high-blooper, catching the Newark goalkeeper off guard and placing Wayne ahead 1-0 at halftime.
As the second half began, Newark regrouped and showcased their determination to bounce back. The Reds came out strong, and junior Kaiden Carr became the hero of the match by scoring the match-winning goal with just seven minutes left on the clock. Carr’s goal followed a successful play that tied the game moments earlier, credits going to fellow teammate Deikan Bueg, who also found the net.
This win improves Newark’s record to 16-2 while ending Wayne Central’s season at 12-6. Newark will now face off against the No. 2 Brockport Central in the semifinals, scheduled for October 29th at 7:30 p.m. at Gates Chili High School.
Both teams displayed great effort and sportsmanship, marking a memorable night in Newark High School’s soccer history.
