Clinton, SC – Dr. Anita Gustafson has returned to her roots, taking on the role of President at Presbyterian College, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this position since the college’s founding in 1880. Her ambitious journey led her back home on August 1, 2023, after nearly seven years as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.

Having previously served at Presbyterian College for two decades in various academic and administrative capacities, Gustafson left in 2016 to further her career. Now, she is eager to bring her experience back to the vibrant community of about 1,200 students. Gustafson emphasizes her focus on fostering a familial atmosphere while aiming to enhance the school’s academic reputation and develop programs to attract future students.

Reflecting on Historic Milestone

In her first few weeks in office, Gustafson reflected on the significance of her role. “I’m really honored to be the first woman president of PC,” she stated. “I realize the importance of these first steps for women, and that women of previous generations worked hard for their daughters and granddaughters to enjoy.” Despite this historic distinction, she remains focused on practical work rather than the milestones achieved.

Future Vision for the College

As she embarks on her journey as president, Gustafson is dedicated to crafting a vision for the future of Presbyterian College, particularly in preparation for its upcoming 150th anniversary in 2030. “I want to lean into academic excellence and service by promoting student-faculty research and service-learning,” she shared. Gustafson is keen on mentoring students as they discover their career paths, integrating academic pursuits with real-world applications.

The Importance of Liberal Arts Education

Gustafson advocates strongly for the value of a liberal arts education in today’s job market. “Employers value skills such as communicating through writing and speaking, working with people from diverse backgrounds, and synthesizing complex ideas to find solutions to problems,” she noted. Her strategy involves preparing students for jobs that may not yet exist, while also fostering their curiosity and lifelong learning.

The college aims to provide a broad curriculum across diverse subjects including fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, enriching students’ educational experiences and contributing to their roles as future leaders in society.

Previously, Gustafson led various departments within the college, but her role as president offers a more comprehensive leadership opportunity. “I’m connected with and responsible for all parts of the college as president, and I am better able to bring ideas to fruition,” she explained. Her intention is to build on existing relationships with alumni while welcoming new members to the college community.

Local Impact and Scholarships

In an effort to give back to the local community, Gustafson has introduced the Laurens County Service Scholars program, which incentivizes high school students from Laurens County to enroll at Presbyterian College, enhancing community ties and supporting local education.

Dr. Gustafson’s formal inauguration was celebrated recently with the Presidential Scholarship Ball, a vibrant event designed to raise funds for students needing financial assistance. The evening featured dinner and live music with the Ansley Stewart Band, a 2007 PC graduate, making the event a festive celebration of the college’s future while honoring its storied past.

Personal Touches in Leadership

In her personal life, Gustafson enjoys sports and traveling with her family, including her husband Charlie and son Karl. “Much of my job encompasses things I love,” she remarked, enjoying the connection with the community through athletic events and other gatherings.
