Sponsor Our ArticlesLaurens County, S.C. – It was a somber Wednesday night when a multi-vehicle crash unfolded on Interstate 26, shaking the local community to its core. Around 8 p.m., the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the eastbound lanes near mile marker 60 turned into the scene of a devastating accident involving five vehicles.
According to the troopers, traffic was at a standstill when a tractor trailer and two cars came to a stop. In a sudden turn of events, a third car attempted to back into the emergency lane to avoid the gridlock. Unfortunately, it was during this maneuver that a second tractor trailer barreled into one of the stopped vehicles, leading to a chain reaction that no one saw coming.
The impact was severe, as that car was slammed into the median barrier and then pushed toward the two other stopped vehicles and the tractor trailer. The chaotic scene caught everyone off guard, and the sound of crunching metal echoed across the interstate. Alas, the crash resulted in a tragic loss of life. Anthony White, a 73-year-old resident of Piedmont, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The aftermath was heart-wrenching, with four other individuals suffering injuries during the crash. They were quickly whisked away to nearby hospitals, where they received the urgent medical attention they needed. The Laurens County Coroner’s Office stepped in to assist in the identification of the deceased and provide support to the affected families. Reports indicate that among the injured was a 7-year-old child, whose well-being is on the minds of many in the community.
As if the situation couldn’t be more serious, two of the injured individuals had to be airlifted by helicopter to a Greenville hospital. Local emergency responders sprang into action, demonstrating the community’s quick response during crises and their commitment to helping others in need.
