Monument Academy Cross Country Team Makes Historic Debut at State Championships

Tri-Lakes High School Cross Country Team Shines at State Championships

Tri-Lakes, Colorado – The Monument Academy East, a small charter high school in District 38, has recently made a big splash in the world of cross country. Despite being regarded as the “little guy” in a district filled with larger, more established schools like Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge, the team has proven that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements.

This year, the Monument Academy cross country team earned a spot at the state championships, marking a significant milestone for the young program. On the day of the competition, Matthew Start, a senior, finished in third place in the Class 2A division, showcasing his incredible talent and determination. His sub-16-minute time was one of the best in his competitive group, and it establishes him as a standout athlete.

The road to the state championships wasn’t easy for Monument Academy. With only 122 students enrolled, forming a cohesive sports program presented numerous challenges. However, thanks to the relentless efforts of co-coaches Tom Eller and Cathy Owen, the team has flourished. They successfully guided a group of eleven dedicated runners through ups and downs, constantly supporting one another amidst budget constraints and other obstacles.

“I love running. Every part of it,” said Sharon Klein, the team’s only female runner. She fiercely competes alongside her male teammates, eager to prove her worth within the team. “The pain during the last 800 meters is tough, but I push through.” Her tenacity reflects the spirit of the entire squad.

Coach Cathy Owen, an All-American runner, and Eller, an active competitor, have not only contributed their time but also their passion for the sport. Their investments in the team extend beyond training; they’ve been vital in navigating the logistics of practices and meets, as transportation can be a significant hurdle without school-funded buses.

As the Athletic Director, Michael Swendsen is focused on future growth. “How do I get our school a banner?” he pondered, advocating for more support and fundraising to solidify their status among local athletics. Principal Angela Duca expressed pride in her students, saying, “We always find a way beyond the challenges.”

The story of Monument Academy cross country is more than just running; it’s about community, determination, and proving that being a “little guy” can lead to big dreams. With the spirit of resilience and teamwork, this small but mighty school shows that they are true giants in the Tri-Lakes area.
