In Columbia, two high schools are gearing up for an exciting state championship weekend. Helias and Blair Oaks are set to compete for their respective titles, showcasing their determination and skill throughout the season.
Helias will be seeking its first-ever Class 5 state championship as they take on the undefeated Platte County team. After winning the Class 4 championship in 2020, Helias has come a long way, boasting a record of 12-1. Their only loss this season occurred in a hard-fought overtime game against Rock Bridge in Week 5. Head coach Chris Hentges expressed optimism about his team’s focus, stating, “We had a Week 5 slip-up with Rock Bridge. The guys really refocused after that, and we’ve been playing really good football.” Junior quarterback Austin Weaver, whose brother was part of the previous championship team, shared his excitement, saying, “We’re all just super excited to play in the game.”
On the other side, Blair Oaks is set to face Seneca for the Class 3 state championship after clinching the Class 2 title in 2022. Blair Oaks also holds a record of 12-1, having suffered their only defeat to Lutheran North in Week 2. The Falcons have been impressive in the playoffs, averaging an astounding 51 points per game and outscoring their opponents 192-20 in the tournament. Coach Ted LePage emphasizes five key components for winning success, which include stand, start, alignment, assignment, and effort. “It comes down to the fundamentals,” LePage said.
Blair Oaks is no stranger to glory; in fact, player Zachariah Bonnett comes from a family of champions, with both of his brothers having won state football championships. He noted, “It would mean everything (to win). I’ve been praying about it.”
The championship games are set to take place at Faurot Field on Saturday. Blair Oaks and Seneca will kick off at 11 a.m., followed by Helias facing Platte County in the Class 5 championship at 7 p.m. Fans are sure to be in for an exciting day of high school football.
