The Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site is located in Clinton, South Carolina, and preserves the site of the American Revolutionary War battle that took place on August 19, 1780. The battle was a major turning point in the war, following Patriot defeats at Camden and Fishing Creek earlier that month.
The site is located at 398 State Park Road, Clinton, SC 29325, and their phone number is (864) 938-0100. Park staff interpret the battle and the frontier warfare that took place in upstate South Carolina during the American Revolution.
The battle began when a force of 200 Patriot militiamen, led by Colonel Andrew Pickens, attacked a combined force of 300 Loyalist militiamen and 200 British Provincial Troops, led by Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton. The Loyalists were camped at Musgrove Mill, a grist mill on the Enoree River.
The Patriots attacked at dawn, catching the Loyalists by surprise. The Loyalists were quickly routed, and Tarleton was forced to flee. The Patriots captured over 100 prisoners and a large quantity of supplies.
The Battle of Musgrove Mill was a significant victory for the Patriots. It boosted morale and helped to turn the tide of the war in the South. The site is now a state historic park, and visitors can learn about the battle and the American Revolution through exhibits, guided tours, and living history programs.
