Laurens Community Launches Free Health and Wellness Program Series for 2024

Laurens Community Embraces Health and Wellness with Exciting New Series!

Happy December, Laurens! As we cozy up for the winter months and prepare to wrap up 2024, there’s no better time to tackle those New Year’s resolutions, especially those focused on health and wellness. And in Laurens, we’re lucky to have fantastic resources aimed at keeping us physically and mentally strong. This winter, the Laurens YMCA is once again showcasing its commitment to community well-being with a brand new partnership with Self Regional Healthcare (SRH).

What’s Happening?

Starting this January, the YMCA and SRH are offering a series of free health and wellness programs designed to inform, engage, and motivate community members. If you missed the opportunity to participate in the “Get Moving with SELF” program in November, which focused on Living with Arthritis, don’t worry! There are several exciting upcoming sessions that you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars!

  • Preventing and Managing Diabetes: A Doctor’s Perspective with Dr. Peter Partee – January 21, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
  • From Plate to Health: Practical Tips for Better Eating with Michele Gehr, RDN, LDN – April 15, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
  • Mastering Your Mood: Strategies for Emotional Balance with Kelly Gallagher-Kiley, LCSW-CP – July 15, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

How It Works

Each program kicks off with a short discussion led by a Self Regional provider. After sharing valuable insights, participants will get active with some light physical activity, traditionally a relaxing walk around the SRH sponsored walking track. Cyndi New, Director of Community Health and Health Equity, explains, “Each program involves a short discussion followed by some physical activity. It’s a great way to learn and move!”

Why Should You Participate?

As the new year approaches, many of us reflect on personal goals, particularly regarding our health. This series isn’t just for YMCA members; it’s open to everyone in the Laurens community! Merry Chandler, YMCA Wellness Director, emphasizes the importance of community engagement: “We hope participants who are not YMCA members will see the benefits of becoming members, and we hope to give folks an opportunity to explore a range of health topics with our local healthcare providers.”

It’s an excellent chance to not only learn about healthier living but also meet locals and share experiences as we all strive to improve our well-being! Plus, these discussions and activities are designed in such a way that they can fit comfortably into your routine, no matter your current fitness level.

Other Offerings at the YMCA

The Laurens YMCA is dedicated to fostering a healthy lifestyle for everyone. Whether you are interested in group and personal training, Diabetes Prevention classes, or simply want to join a friendly community, there’s something for everyone! You can discover what the YMCA has in store by visiting their website.

Get Involved!

If you’re ready to jump on board with these enriching programs, make sure to reserve your spot for the “Get Moving with SELF” sessions. All you need to do is send an email to communityhealth@selfregional.org to register!

What better way to start the new year than prioritizing your health and meeting new friends? Get ready to move and groove, Laurens – your path to wellness begins here!
