This past week, the cozy small town of Laurens lit up with joy and excitement as Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) gathered to honor some amazing students during their recent School Board Meeting. This isn’t just any ordinary ritual; it’s a heartfelt way to recognize the hard work and determination these young scholars have shown throughout the school year.
Among the stars of the day was Chloe May, who stood out for her impeccable performance on the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY) Math, bringing a huge smile to her teachers and peers alike. But she wasn’t the only one! The EOCEP perfect score students had previously received their awards at the LCSD 55 September School Board Meeting. Just to give you a quick rundown, SC READY evaluates students in grades 3-8 in subjects like mathematics, English Language Arts, social studies, and science. The EOCEP tests, on the other hand, are designed to measure student performance in crucial gateway courses in mathematics, ELA, and science.
The grateful students were greeted by LDHS Principal Lewis Compton, who proudly presented them with certificates and $100 checks in recognition of their hard work. LCSD 55 School Board Chairperson Cathy Little and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rhett Harris joined in the festivities, all while Principal Compton exuberantly addressed the audience, saying, “I am beyond proud to share the outstanding achievements of our students who have earned a perfect score on their End-of-Course Exams! This incredible accomplishment is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.”
Speaking of dedication, one teacher who deserves a spotlight is Etha Parvathi, a passionate Biology teacher at Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS). Her innovative teaching methods and unwavering support for her students have led to many of them achieving perfect scores in Biology. She shared, “I employ a comprehensive approach to ensure my students are successful in EOC Biology,” emphasizing how she intertwines hands-on activities and real-world applications to keep her students engaged.
Another incredible faculty member, Mary Pieniak, has been making a huge impact in her English classes. Her insightful teaching strategies prepare students directly for the EOCEP assessments, focusing on all the essential elements they need, from tone and mood to essay writing.
Speaking of impact, let’s not forget LDHS student Sarah Field who received perfect scores in both Biology 1 and English 2. She expressed her gratitude towards her teachers and offered wise advice to fellow students: “Do the work and keep up in class, and just do the best you can and not worry about having a perfect score.” Wise words from a disciplined student!
Another proud achiever, Elizabeth “Liz” Leggett, perfectly nailed the United States History and the Constitution test. She shared how attentive she was in class and how her supportive teacher, Mrs. Liner, played a key role in her preparation.
As the meeting concluded, the atmosphere buzzed with pride and determination. LCSD 55 not only recognized student achievements but also emphasized the importance of community support in education. As the clouds drifted away, it was clear that this community is committed to supporting its students on their journey towards success. Here’s to many more celebrations of hard work and achievement!
