Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Sestercentennial Committee Announces Winners of Essay Competition

Laurens, SC – Thursday, August 15, 2024

The Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Committee (LC250), in collaboration with The South Carolina Revolutionary War 250th Commission (SC250) and The Laurens County Chamber of Commerce (LCCC), proudly shared the results of the recent essay competition. This contest aimed to encourage students from all public, private, and home schools in Laurens County to delve into and celebrate the significant contributions of the county during the American Revolutionary War.

The essay competition, titled “Laurens County Contributions to Revolutionary War Victory,” invited students to research and ponder the County’s role in the war effort. The winning essays showcased outstanding creativity, deep insight, and an exceptional understanding of Laurens County’s impact on American history.

Winners of the Essay Competition:

  • 1st Place: Malik McCurry, Sanders Middle School
  • 2nd Place: Winter Young, Sanders Middle School

Ernie Segars, Chair of the Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Sestercentennial Committee, expressed his excitement, saying, “We are thrilled to see the creativity and historical insights that our students have showcased through this competition.” He added, “These projects not only honor our County’s rich Revolutionary War history but also foster a deeper connection between our youth and their heritage.”

The essay competition was judged by the Education Committee, and cash prizes were awarded to the first and second place winners. The announcements were made during the Revolutionary War Lecture series at the Laurens County Museum.
