Lawrence and Wamego, Kansas – The 2024 Kansas high school cross country state championships took place this past Saturday, attracting runners from across the state to compete in 5K races. The exciting events took place at two locations: Rim Rock Farm for Classes 6A, 5A, and 3A, while Wamego Country Club hosted Classes 4A, 2A, and 1A.
The Class 6A boys’ team title went to Garden City, scoring a total of 66 points. Junction City followed in second place with 101 points, while Shawnee Mission South secured third with 104 points. In terms of individual performances, Theel of Olathe West clinched the top medal with a time of 15:20.11.
In the girls’ division, it was a tie for first place in the team standings between Olathe West and Washburn Rural, both finishing with 80 points. Shawnee Mission East came in third with 84 points. Pickler from Junction City earned the top medal, finishing the race in 18:37.27.
The Class 5A boys saw Spring Hill take home the championship title with an impressive score of 35 points. Blue Valley Southwest was closely behind with 40 points. Individual medalist honors went to Beckman of Spring Hill for his time of 15:23.94.
For the girls, St. James Academy took the crown with a score of 77 points, while Kapaun Mount Carmel and Blue Valley Southwest followed. The top medalist was Rupe of Salina Central finishing the race at 17:09.77.
Wamego won the team title in the Class 4A boys’ division, scoring 52 points. McPherson was a solid second with 119 points. Muehler of McPherson finished in the lead with a time of 16:33.40.
Buhler claimed the team title for the Class 4A girls, with a total of 78 points. Eudora barely came up short with 89 points. Individual honors went to Keltner from Eudora, who wowed the crowd with a finish of 19:18.56.
The boys in Class 3A saw Holcomb cross the finish line first as a team, scoring 58 points. In individual competition, Tofteland from Wichita Trinity took the top spot with a time of 15:36.75.
Hesston emerged at the top for the girls in Class 3A with 104 points, while Wichita Trinity Academy finished just behind with 105 points. Medalist honors went to Hein of Wichita Trinity, who finished in 18:26.90.
In the Class 2A competition, Central Heights dominated with a score of 34 points. Hammond of Central Heights stood out as a top individual runner, finishing the race at 16:35.85.
The girls in Class 2A saw Remington and Berean Academy tie in team points, both finishing with 108 points but Remington took the championship. Howland of Smith Center secured the gold medal with her impressive time of 18:50.76.
Quinter claimed the title for the Class 1A boys with an outstanding team score of 29. Durst of Lebo was the top individual, completing the race in 16:53.20.
Lastly, South Gray topped the Class 1A girls’ standings with a team score of 34 points. Individually, Boydston of Ellis dominated the race, finishing in 19:32.33.
The championships highlighted incredible talent and determination among the young runners, showcasing the spirit of Kansas high school sports.
