There’s great news for residents of Newberry County! After more than three long years filled with construction, the John E. Caldwell Bridge, also known as the Boundary Street Bridge, has officially reopened. This much-anticipated event took place on October 24. While it was initially set to wrap up in November 2022, unexpected delays pushed the reopening back by another 11 months. But now, the wait is finally over, and the community can breathe a sigh of relief!
One notable resident, Joe Goeckner, shared his thoughts on the bridge’s reopening. He mentioned that it’s been a long journey, especially since access from Boundary Street was shut down about seven years ago. Goeckner expressed relief about the bridge’s beloved return, especially given its importance to his church situated right next to where the bridge connects to Nance Street. “We had access to our parking lots off of Nance Street, but it created a lot of congestion,” he noted. The reopening is bound to make a positive difference, easing the congestion that had become part of everyday life for him and others nearby.
The story of the Caldwell Bridge isn’t a recent development; it goes back several years. Reconstruction plans were first revealed in a county public information meeting in 2013. During that meeting, many residents voiced their worries about the possible impact on their neighborhood. Goeckner attended the meeting and remembers those concerns well. “They came out and were concerned it was going to change their neighborhood,” he recalled, noting the respect he has for their opinions.
In response to community input, the city decided to replace the bridge rather than relocate it in 2014. However, after a long wait of seven years, actual construction work didn’t kick off until September 2021. This delay meant that the bridge would remain closed for quite some time, impacting traffic and access for locals.
According to City Manager Jason Taylor, the Boundary Street Bridge plays a crucial role in the community’s infrastructure. “It connects two of our main arteries, Drayton Street and Nance Street,” he explained. This connection is vital not just for residents but for the overall functioning of Newberry as a whole. Taylor expressed his gratitude that the Department of Transportation took on the project, commending them for doing a wonderful job throughout the reconstruction process.
With the bridge now open, the community can once again enjoy easier access to key areas within Newberry. Efforts to improve local traffic conditions and connectivity are expected to see positive results. Residents can finally navigate without the added frustrations that came with the bridge’s years-long closure.
It’s safe to say that for Newberry residents, this reopening is not just about a bridge; it symbolizes progress and community collaboration over time. The excitement surrounding this milestone is palpable, and the benefits of the bridge can be felt from the churches to the local traffic routes. And who knows? Perhaps this new chapter will be just the beginning of further enhancements in Newberry County!
