Woodruff, S.C. – Celebrations are in full swing as Woodruff marks its 150th birthday this year. Once a humble bedroom community, Woodruff is now on the brink of a dynamic transformation.
It wasn’t long ago that Woodruff seemed immune to change. Leaning on its **strong sense of faith and beloved football traditions**, the city appeared to be in a time capsule. “Growth is hard for some people,” said Mayor Kenneth Gist, reflecting on the city’s slow pace of progression. “However, as difficult as it might be, **growth is necessary** to ensure our youth have job opportunities and housing options.”
Thanks to a major new neighbor, BMW, these opportunities are becoming a reality. “For years, people left Woodruff because there weren’t many options for them to return to,” explained Lee Bailey, Woodruff’s city manager. “But now, that’s changing. **People can come back, work, and see a future here** if they choose to.”
The arrival of BMW’s **”Plant Woodruff”** is set to usher in over 300 jobs, with the potential for future expansion. This not only creates job opportunities but also encourages further development in the area.
Woodruff is working hard to preserve its core values even as it evolves. According to Bailey, “We take great pride in our culture and where we come from. **We aim to retain the hardworking spirit and identity** of this community.”
Mayor Gist adds, “Our mission is to maintain the faith, hope, and spirit of Woodruff. We want to keep our cultural heritage intact.”
With the city gearing up for significant development, Woodruff seems to be on the verge of a new era. Lee Bailey believes this current administration will be remembered for shaping the city’s future for the next 50 years. “As much as change can be challenging, it’s crucial for our community’s growth,” he remarked.
Beyond the job market boost, the burgeoning businesses and new housing options demonstrate the city’s readiness for transformation, all while staying true to its roots. As the city anticipates sustained growth and new opportunities, Woodruff’s charm remains its enduring foundation.
