Fall Sports Season Kicks Off in Vermont High Schools
This week, the much-anticipated 2024 Vermont high school fall sports season kicked off with a flurry of exciting matches across various sports including soccer, volleyball, and field hockey. Many teams displayed their skills and determination as they began their quest for victory.
Soccer Highlights
In girls’ soccer, Essex defeated South Burlington with a narrow score of 1-0. Sophia Liu netted the only goal of the match and Hazel Fry contributed with an assist. Kelsie Scanlon was notable in goal for Essex with five saves.
Mount Mansfield triumphed over Burlington in a thriller, winning 5-4 after two overtimes. Chloe DeJong scored the decisive goal, while Ella Knudsen shined for Burlington with four goals of her own. Meanwhile, Champlain Valley secured a comfortable 3-0 win against Colchester, with standout performances from Reese Kingsbury and Elsa Klein who each scored a goal and provided an assist.
Volleyball Action
The volleyball courts also buzzed with activity. Essex took on Champlain Valley in a gripping match. Essex emerged victorious, winning 3-1. Riley Austin was the star of the game, racking up nine kills and twelve digs. In another match, Lyndon defeated Randolph 3-1, showcasing impressive skills with Noa Martinez leading the charge with key aces and assists.
