High School Football Championship Updates from Southern California
Southern California was buzzing with excitement as the CIF Southern California Regional championship games wrapped up on Saturday, December 7. Several teams displayed impressive performances, earning their spots in upcoming state championship games.
In the Division 1-A showdown, Edison pulled off a thrilling victory against Granite Hills with a final score of 34-28. With a standout performance, Julius Gillick rushed for 240 yards on 39 carries and scored three touchdowns. Edison is now set to face Central of Fresno in the Division 1A state championship next Saturday, December 14, at Saddleback College.
Moving on to Division 2-A, Palos Verdes secured their place in the state title game by defeating Bakersfield Christian 28-10. This marks another impressive second-half shutout for Palos Verdes, showcasing their strong defense and determination.
In Division 3-A, Rio Hondo Prep triumphed over Poway with a score of 28-14. This victory not only earned them the CIF State Division 3-A South Regional title, but also a spot in the state championship game scheduled for Saturday, December 15, at Long Beach City College’s Veterans Stadium.
On the other hand, St. Pius X-St. Matthias, who had a tough regular season finishing at 1-9, stunned everyone by defeating St. Augustine 28-7 in Division 4-A. They will now face NorCal champion Sonora in the state championship game also on December 14.
Other notable results from the day included Palmdale beating Selma 41-38 in Division 5-A and Monte Vista winning against Pasadena 41-21 in Division 6-A. In Division 7-A, Pioneer secured a solid win against Panorama with a score of 24-0 and will advance to the regional bowl game next week. Key offensive touchdowns came from Jose Rojas and Damian Salguero, along with Darean Bullard’s scoop and score.
