Excitement Buzzes at Laurens District 55 High School as HBCU Recruitment Event Kicks Off

Laurens, SC – In a vibrant display of opportunity and connection, the inaugural Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Recruitment and Resource event took place at Laurens District 55 High School, marking a significant moment in the community. Over a dozen colleges spanning from Winston Salem, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia, came together for an exciting day aimed at opening doors for students from marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds.

Creating Pathways to Education

Sponsored by local entities such as the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, Pragma Home Healthcare, and Geneva’s Catering, the event’s overall goal was crystal clear: to provide students with access to educational institutions, resources, and organizations that can help them succeed in their educational and career journeys.

Dr. Carlos Littlejohn, the Director of Student Services at the school, played a pivotal role in emphasizing the importance of making postsecondary education appealing and accessible for students. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm as students eagerly engaged with representatives from the attending colleges.

Colleges Galore: Making Connections

With notable institutions like Piedmont Technical College, Greenville Technical College, and Spartanburg Community College in attendance, students had the chance to connect directly with potential future alma maters. Many represented schools reported an influx of enrollment inquiries, showcasing the effectiveness of the event in generating interest among students.

In a standout moment, seven students were accepted into South Carolina State University right at the event, while another six students were accepted into Benedict College, hinting at the bright futures ahead of them.

More Than Just Colleges

The event offered far more than just college connections. Local organizations stepped in to provide a wealth of opportunities for attendees. Jobs were on the table, along with scholarship applications and valuable career counseling. Michelin and Gateway Counseling Center were among those offering support in finding financial aid guidance.

The excitement didn’t stop at informational booths. With George “DJ Kurious George” Dorrah IV spinning tunes, the atmosphere was lively and celebrations echoed throughout the venue. The day was packed with energy, and the vibe catered to both learning and enjoyment.

A Sweet Touch of Sisterhood and Service

Adding an extra layer of community spirit, eight sorority organizations participated in the day’s events. They shared insights about their programs and various initiatives back at their universities. Notably, the talented ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. took the opportunity to conduct a voter registration drive, encouraging civic engagement among students.

Inclusivity at Its Core

The event had thoughtfully waived registration and college application fees for attendees, ensuring that every student had a fair shot at exploring new horizons without the financial burden. To further sweeten the deal, a giveaway drawing kept the excitement alive, with attendees eagerly anticipating the announcement of winners.

A Phenomenal Experience Despite the Weather

Despite facing some weather challenges, the team behind the event maintained a celebratory atmosphere. The hard work of school leaders and sponsors truly paid off as they created an inspiring environment for students to network and dive into opportunities that could shape their futures.

The inaugural HBCU Recruitment and Resource event at Laurens District 55 High School emerged as a resounding success, promising a brighter future for students having made valuable connections in their educational journey. With music, food, and excitement in the air, the day was a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within the community when people come together for a common cause.
