$750 Financial Support for 2024 Graduates in Laurens County to Ease College Textbook Costs

Exciting News for Graduating Students in Laurens County!

Laurens County, S.C. – It’s an exciting time for the 2024 graduating class in Laurens County, as they have a fantastic opportunity to receive $750 to help with the cost of college textbooks! This initiative is part of the GEAR UP Program, a remarkable federal grant aimed at supporting students as they transition from high school to their post-secondary education.

What is GEAR UP All About?

The GEAR UP Program stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. Its mission is to set students up for success by increasing their academic performance and readiness for college life. The program strives to help students not just graduate high school but successfully navigate their first year of college.

To be eligible for the $750 stipend, students simply need to provide their college I.D. and a spring course schedule. It’s such a straightforward process that could significantly lighten the financial load for students heading into college!

Students Share Their Thoughts

One of the students, Lee Malone, expressed relief at this financial support. “It’s really expensive,” Malone noted, pointing out the various costs that come with college—such as dorm fees and food plans. “Any help you can get is very good.” The weight of financial stress is familiar to many students, and this program is a great helping hand.

Another student, I’Nailyne Darby, echoed these sentiments, recognizing how impactful the stipend can be. “To have $750 going towards textbooks might not seem like much, but it’s a lot when it comes to college,” she said. Thanks to this financial support, Darby is excited about being able to purchase her books before the semester begins, allowing her a smoother start.

Support from Educators

Leigh Anne Simpson, a college support specialist, pointed out the significant impact the GEAR UP grant is having on students in Laurens County District 55. “Through GEAR UP, we were able to raise the number of students applying to colleges by 44% last year,” she explained. An impressive 83% of students filled out college applications, showing the program’s effectiveness.

Simpson and her colleague, Jordan Greene, proudly noted that they now have over 200 students currently enrolled in college. They believe that initiatives like this—providing funds for textbooks—are crucial in helping students achieve at least 30 credit hours in their first year.

A Lifeline for Students

The educators recognize just how significant $750 can be for students who are balancing school with job responsibilities, or for those who don’t have the luxury of a steady income while attending classes. “If you don’t have it, how are you expected to stay in school?” Greene pondered, emphasizing the vital role financial support plays in retention and success for college students.

What If You Missed the Event?

If any students couldn’t make it to the event, Simpson and Greene have encouraged them to reach out directly for assistance. They are committed to ensuring that every eligible student can take advantage of the benefits GEAR UP offers. Whether it’s help with textbooks or guidance for college applications, they’re here to support their students every step of the way.

As the spring semester approaches, the excitement and anticipation in Laurens County are palpable. This tremendous initiative showcases a community coming together to support its youth in their academic endeavors. With programs like GEAR UP, the future is looking bright for the students of Laurens County.
