It’s a bright and sunny day in Laurens, South Carolina, with a high of 71°F and gentle winds blowing from the northeast at about 5 to 10 mph. The beautiful weather is fitting, as the spotlight shines on a local football hero this week!
On Monday, the Lc Touchdown Club proudly announced their Player of the Week for games played on November 8. The honor goes to none other than Garrett Murphy, a dynamic running back and linebacker for the Laurens Academy Crusaders.
In an exhilarating first round of the SCISA playoffs, Murphy helped propel his team to a convincing victory over Cross Schools with a final score of 56-22. What makes this achievement even more impressive? Murphy showcased an incredibly versatile skill set and determination throughout the game!
During the game, Murphy was truly unstoppable. He rushed for an astounding 141 yards on just six carries, finding the end zone twice with two spectacular touchdowns. But that’s not all—he also made a significant impact in the passing game, catching one pass for 66 yards and another touchdown!
Not to be outdone on defense, Murphy racked up four total tackles and forcefully grabbed one fumble from the opposition. His remarkable performance on both sides of the ball undoubtedly played a key role in the Crusaders’ triumphant win.
The word on the field is that Murphy is not just a great player, but also a standout leader. Head Coach Jolly Doolittle expressed his admiration, saying, “Garrett is everything a coach expects of a captain. He is a 360-degree leader. He is a great football player and an even better young man.” What a testament to Garrett’s character and dedication to the sport!
Mark your calendars, folks! The Lc Touchdown Club will honor Murphy at their next meeting on November 21 at The Ridge in Laurens. This gathering typically draws excited fans and players alike, and this time will be particularly special as they recognize Murphy’s fantastic achievement.
The meeting will kick off at noon, but if you want to grab a bite beforehand, the food service line opens at 11:45 am. For just $15, you can join in on the festivities and cheer for a local hero!

It’s a great opportunity for all football fans to gather and enjoy some spirited discussions about their favorite teams!
