Fatz Cafe Shuts its Doors Overnight Without Notice
Fatz Cafe, a popular dining spot located at 179 East Corporate Center Drive in Clinton, abruptly shut its doors on Wednesday, leaving customers and employees in confusion and shock. The closure marked an unexpected end for this beloved chain at its location in Clinton, which city leaders refer to as the “gateway” to the town.
There was no advance warning of the closure, and the company’s Facebook page has been silent since July 18. The restaurant company’s website, however, remains live and notably advertises a $500 prize giveaway in return for customer reviews, scheduled for Sept. 1. The suddenness of the closure has left many uncertain about their gift cards, and the number of employees who lost their jobs due to Fatz’s closing is unclear.
Fatz’s Declining Influence
Founded in 1988, Fatz once had a thriving business with nearly 50 stores at its peak in 2011. However, over the last decade, the chain experienced drastic shrinkage. In 2019 alone, Fatz closed 32 of its locations and in 2020, it shut down another 10 following a steep 42% sales decline. Problems exacerbated by the pandemic sealed Fatz’s fate, adding to the casualty list of pandemic-hit businesses.
In total, Fatz Cafe had 18 locations across North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. Other impacted communities in South Carolina include Camden, Florence, Greenwood, Greer, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Rock Hill.
According to numerous media reports, the restaurant company has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. In a recent yet unanticipated development, it was also announced that breakfast and brunch would be available at several stores. However, the company had to cancel an “unveiling” event later.
Community Mourning the Loss
The closure has been met with shock and disappointment by many, evident from an outpouring of nostalgia on social media. A Facebook post by the former Clinton store manager Mundy Woodruff recounting favorite moments at the establishment has already received 86 comments.
Renewed Commitment to Quality Died Down
Just a month back, Fatz Southern Kitchen had renewed its commitment to quality with a menu that blended familiar favorites and creative new additions in all its 18 locations including Clinton. This promise, unfortunately, witnessed a short-lived realization with the abrupt closure.
Emphasizing a focus on local hiring and professional leadership, the company aimed to connect better with its staff, guests, and the surrounding community. Fatz had also outlined its plans for a robust catering menu to serve guests outside the restaurant for personal, business, or social occasions. However, these plans will remain unfulfilled.
While the closure of Fatz Cafe marks a significant loss to the local dining scene in Clinton and other affected cities, it will be remembered as a beloved dining destination that sat at the heart of many communities.
