Greenville – A unique approach to appliance retail is making waves in Upstate South Carolina. **Fanning’s Appliances**, a family-run enterprise, stands out in a crowded market by specializing in discounted items labeled as “**new open box**,” “**scratch and dent**,” “**overstock**,” and more. Despite the labels, customers are often pleasantly surprised by the quality and appearance of the merchandise.
**Owner Brad Fanning** explains the language behind *Fanning’s* product descriptions: “I’m not authorized to advertise overstock or liquidated merchandise as brand new. There are certain phrases that we are required to use, such as ‘scratch and dent’ or ‘appearance damaged.’” He emphasizes that these words are necessary to differentiate their inventory from the brand-new items ordered directly from the manufacturer.
Interestingly, the vast majority of appliances at **Fanning’s** come straight from the manufacturer, still in their original boxes. The store’s team thoroughly *inspects* and *tests* the items before they hit the showroom floor.
“When customers look at our products, their first question is usually, ‘Where is the scratch? Where is the dent?’ Not everything has one,” Brad says, dispelling a common misconception. “It’s a common misconception. When we use a word like ‘dent,’ people think it’s been hit with a baseball bat,” adds Heather Fanning, Brad’s wife and business partner. She assures that any item with significant damage wouldn’t make it onto the floor.
The business began in **Easley in 2018** and has since expanded to **Fountain Inn**, **Wellford**, and **Anderson**. It’s very much a family operation, with Brad’s brother Jesse serving as the general manager and Heather handling human resources. “We’ve got **Brad**, with his entrepreneurial personality and big ideas; **Jesse**, who makes sure that everything is followed through to the end; and I focus primarily on our employees,” Heather says.
Despite growing ambitions, Heather and Brad insist that their primary focus remains on their local stores, employees, and the community. Customer satisfaction is paramount. “We want people to have a positive experience. And if they don’t, Brad will do what it takes to make it right,” Heather assures. Brad himself has been known to visit customers personally to resolve issues.
**Fanning’s Appliances** offers professional delivery and installation with all products coming with at least a *one-year warranty*. If any issue arises within the first 30 days, the company resolves it directly, rather than referring customers to the manufacturer. “We want customers to have a positive and personalized experience every single time. That is what makes us different,” Brad says.
Brad likens the company to the feel-good television show “**Cheers**.” “When you come back, we’ll remember your name. We’ll remember your face,” he explains, highlighting the personalized service that has become a cornerstone of their business.
The stores collectively stock around **10,000 appliances** at any given time. A significant amount of inventory is moved weekly, showcasing *Fanning’s* efficient operation. Additionally, their network extends beyond state lines, with partnerships in North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
The company’s story is a testament to **innovation**, **family values**, and **customer dedication**. Brad, an entrepreneurial spirit who began by selling car tire rims from his college dorm room, continues to infuse creativity into the business. “If he’s not sure how to do something, he teaches himself,” Heather proudly shares.
With a **low employee turnover** and a steadfast focus on quality and service, **Fanning’s Appliances** is not just another store. It’s where customers can find substantial savings without sacrificing quality, all while experiencing friendly and personalized service from a locally-rooted family business.
