Escaped Inmate Captured Following Crime Spree in Columbia, S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Escaped Inmate Captured After Crime Spree

Early Thursday morning, authorities in COLUMBIA, S.C. apprehended an escaped inmate who had been involved in a series of criminal activities, including attempted break-ins and car thefts. This marked a critical turn in the ongoing search for four inmates who escaped from the Chesterfield County Detention Center earlier this week.

Who Was Involved?

The person arrested was identified as Emanuel Planco. He is part of a group of four inmates, including Anton Conway Bennett, Kyonne Marquise Mcleod, and De’shawn Malik Fox, who managed to flee the detention center on Tuesday.

What Happened?

Residents at the Greenbriar Apartments reported a suspicious individual possibly breaking into cars on Thursday morning. This prompted the response of sheriff’s deputies, who quickly arrived on the scene. Planco was witnessed attempting to break into a vehicle by a K-9 specialist.

As law enforcement officials pursued Planco, he fled the area, leading deputies on a brief chase along Lone Drive. Authorities were able to deploy stop sticks to halt his escape, but he continued running into nearby woods. A K-9 officer successfully located him within this wooded area. During the crime spree, Planco also attempted to enter a home on Willow Oak Drive, where the homeowner fired a shot at him, causing him to flee.

Where Did These Events Occur?

The initial reports of suspicious activity came from the Greenbriar Apartments in Richland County. Following this, Planco was spotted near Lone Drive and later in a wooded area adjacent to the location. The attempted home invasion occurred on Willow Oak Drive.

When Did This Occur?

The incidents unfolded early on Thursday morning, shortly after the sun rose. The escape of the four inmates from Chesterfield Detention Center happened on Tuesday, prompting widespread concern within the community.

Why Are Residents Concerned?

Community members are understandably on edge due to the recent criminal activities linked to the escaped inmates. Local resident Jonny Waiters mentioned that many neighbors are keeping their doors locked and staying vigilant, eager for law enforcement to capture the remaining fugitives. Another resident, Isaiah Moore, echoed these concerns, stating that this is not the first time incidents like this had occurred in their area.

Actions Taken by Law Enforcement

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is actively collaborating with local law enforcement agencies in an effort to locate the remaining inmates. Authorities have urged the public not to approach the fugitives, providing a tip line through the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office for anyone with information.

Community Reaction

Residents are taking proactive measures to ensure their safety, with some encouraging their neighbors to immediately report any unusual activity. The collective uncertainty and fear of further incidents have initiated a heightened sense of awareness, with community members ready to assist law enforcement in keeping their neighborhood secure.

Conclusion

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with authorities during incidents of this kind. As law enforcement continues to pursue the other three inmates, residents are hopeful for their swift capture to restore peace and safety to the area.
