Erie High School Sports Events Postponed Due to Winter Weather

ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA – The winter sports season is officially underway in Northwestern Pennsylvania, thanks to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) allowing teams to kick off their 2024-25 season last Friday. However, the actual winter weather did not cooperate with the start of the season. Snow that began falling overnight last Friday has resulted in hazardous conditions across Erie County, leading to the near-standstill of activities in the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a snow warning, predicting an additional eight to fifteen inches of snow could fall by Tuesday night. Due to these weather conditions, several local high school sports events have been postponed or cancelled. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and updates will be provided as they come.

In girls basketball, the following games have been affected:

  • North East at General McLane
  • Frewsburg (New York) at Cathedral Prep
  • Kennedy Catholic at Tonawanda (New York)
  • Cardinal O’Hara – Details pending

In boys basketball, the scheduled games that have been impacted include:

  • North East at Meadville, now rescheduled for December 21 at North East
  • Erie at General McLane
  • Warren at Mercyhurst Prep

In addition, the Metro League has announced a delay in the start of their 2024-25 season for girls bowling, which will now begin on December 11. Weekly matches are set for each Wednesday through February 19, with the possibility of a February 26 playoff at Eastland Bowl, located at 3729 McClelland Ave.

For further inquiries regarding local sports, Mike Copper can be contacted directly.

As the weather continues to change, it’s essential for athletes and fans alike to stay updated on any further adjustments to the game schedules. We will keep you posted on more developments as they emerge.
