Laurens County, S.C.— A tragic accident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon along Interstate 26 in Laurens County, resulting in a fatality and significant road disruption.
Shortly after 2 p.m., a tractor trailer collided with a disabled pickup truck near mile marker 55 on the westbound side of the highway. The driver of the pickup truck was reportedly changing a tire in the emergency lane at the time of the crash.
State Highway Patrol revealed that the tractor trailer hit both the pickup truck and its driver before careening into a guardrail and tumbling down an embankment. The impact left the tractor trailer in flames, claiming the life of the driver on board.
Authorities identified the victim as 64-year-old Mark Anthony Bigby of Anderson. The Laurens County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity late Wednesday night.
The pickup truck driver, who was changing the tire, sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, a passenger in the pickup truck escaped unscathed.
The accident caused significant delays and road closures as emergency responders worked to contain the fire and clear the wreckage. Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes until further notice.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers present on our highways and the importance of staying vigilant, especially when performing roadside repairs.
