Clinton, SC has something to celebrate! Both Clinton Middle School and Clinton High School, now famously known as Team Clinton, have qualified for the National Science Olympiad after a stellar performance at the state competition held at the charming Presbyterian College on March 3, 2025. It’s a moment to remember!
Medals and Celebrations
During the competition, the excitement was palpable as State Director Patrick Nelson presented an Honorary Gold Medal to President Dr. Anita Gustafson in recognition of this achievement. It signified more than just success; it reflects the dedication and hard work the students have poured into their projects and studies.
The event wasn’t just about winning; it ushered in a community vision spearheaded by District 56 Superintendent Dr. David O’Shields to transform Clinton into “Science City, S.C.” Imagine that – a place where science reigns supreme!
Competitions and Awards Galore
This year’s state competition was truly impressive, featuring 7 venues and individual awards across 23 different areas. The competition certainly brought out the best and brightest, showcasing extraordinary talent from all over the state. The fierce competition led to Oak Ridge Middle School winning the George J. Renwick Sportsmanship Award in Division B, while Bishop England High School took home the same honor in Division C.
Division B Highlights
In the thrilling battle of Division B, Clinton Middle School captured the top spot with a whopping 35 points, conquering 14 out of 23 events. The runner-up was Banks Trail Middle School while GREEN Charter Middle School and Oak Ridge Middle School rounded out the top four.
Division C Highlights
Meanwhile, in Division C, Clinton High School also claimed first place, scoring an impressive 57 points and winning 10 out of 23 events. As it turns out, competition was fierce, with Spring Hill High School and Academic Magnet High School in hot pursuit, along with Dutch Fork High School making up the top four placements.
Onward to National Fame
With these results, both Clinton Middle School and Clinton High School will proudly represent South Carolina at the 41st National Science Olympiad taking place in Lincoln, Nebraska this coming May. What an incredible opportunity for our young scientists!
A Successful Event
This year’s event saw nearly full-house attendance, with students, coaches, faculty members, parents, and friends coming out in support of their local teams. It was a wonderful showcase of community spirit! Additionally, special thanks go to all the volunteers and donors, including the Laurens County Water & Sewer Commission, which generously contributed $1,000 towards the event and provided water for all attendees.
Growth in Science Olympiad
News has it that membership for this statewide Science Olympiad event soared by an impressive 29% compared to the previous year, showing just how many students are eager to dive into the world of science!
Time-Tested Tradition
It’s worth noting that the Science Olympiad has been engaging students since 1983, with over 13,500 schools participating nationwide. Each team is made up of 15 students competing in a variety of 23 events. Notably, Clinton/Bell Street Middle School holds an astounding record, having won state titles 22 times within the past 38 years, including a remarkable streak of 17 years. Clinton High School isn’t far behind with its own 13 state titles.
As defending champions of the South Carolina Science Olympiad, Team Clinton has proven yet again that grit and determination often lead to resounding success. This year’s tournament also marked a new location at Presbyterian College, moving from previous venues like The Citadel and Newberry College.
With their eyes set on national glory, Team Clinton is ready to take on the challenges ahead. Watch out, Lincoln – here comes Team Clinton!
