A tragic shooting occurred in Clinton on Florence Street late Tuesday night, resulting in the death of 69-year-old Rufford Jones. Authorities quickly apprehended 34-year-old Vincent Marc Viner, who has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder. CLINTON – A peaceful Tuesday night took a deadly turn when gunshots rang out on Florence Street, leaving one person dead and a community reeling.
It was approximately 11:17 PM when the Clinton Police Department received reports of multiple gunshots in the area surrounding 304 Florence Street. Responding officers arrived swiftly to find a 69-year-old man lying in the roadway, suffering from severe gunshot wounds. Immediate medical assistance was provided by officers who were first on the scene.
After initial treatment, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to transport the victim to Prisma Health Laurens County Hospital. Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The victim has been identified as Rufford Jones, a long-time resident of the area. Known in the community, the loss of Jones has left friends and family heartbroken.
Authorities wasted no time in apprehending the suspect, who has been identified as 34-year-old Vincent Marc Viner. He was detained at the scene of the crime and has been charged with multiple offenses, including murder, breach of peace-aggravated in nature, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Viner is currently being held at the Johnson Detention Center, where he will await a bond hearing.
