Exciting Developments in Newberry: New Opera House, Residence Hall, and Upcoming Festivals

Exciting Times in Newberry: A City Update from Mayor Senn Foster

Hello, Newberry friends! It’s a beautiful time to be in our city, and I’ve got some fantastic updates to share with you. As someone who enjoys crunching numbers, I’ve accepted the challenge to include them in every paragraph of this update. So, let’s dive right in!

Newberry Opera House Reimagined

First off, let’s talk about the Newberry Opera House. It just reopened after a much-needed interior refresh this summer, and it looks absolutely splendid! With new wood doors at the entrance, fresh colors and carpets in the lobby, and comfortable new seats, this historic venue, which first opened its doors in 1881, continues to stand proud as one of the great theaters in America. A huge shoutout goes to our dedicated team—especially Anne Smith, the executive director—along with the Opera House Foundation Board and local lawmakers for their support. Mark your calendars because there are over 100 shows scheduled for this upcoming season!

New Residence Hall for Newberry College

Speaking of exciting changes, Newberry College is set to unveil a brand-new residence hall next week. This impressive structure replaces the old tennis courts and will accommodate 104 students, adding to the vibrant campus life. Did you know that Newberry College is welcoming students from 39 states and 28 countries? That’s quite a diverse mix of talent and perspectives in our educational community!

Business Buzz in Newberry

In other news, our local business scene is buzzing with activity! Mavis Tire is gearing up for its grand opening by the end of September. With eight bays planned, it promises to be a handy addition for those in need of tire services. Plus, keep an eye out for a new Tropical Smoothie Café in the works, transforming the former Papa John’s. I tried their delicious chicken chipotle club just last week for $7.99, and it was worth every penny! Locally supporting shops and eateries is vital for attracting more business to our town.

Revamping Downtown Spaces

Have you heard? Downtown is getting even better! Starting in October, we’ll see renovations at the old Newberry Observer building located at 1716 Main Street. This site will transform into the Newberry Art Center, enhancing our city’s creative offerings. And here’s a fun fact: a businessman from Charleston recently declared Bar Figaro the number one bar in South Carolina due to its historic charm and selection. Sounds like something we can all be proud of!

Community and Safety Updates

In city government news, the Gully Washer Splash Park wrapped up its summer season with a fantastic total of 9,725 visitors. Newberry Parks and Recreation has planned exciting activities for all ages this fall. On a serious note, the Newberry Fire Department wants to remind everyone about fire prevention. Their slogan, “Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!” is more than a catchphrase. If you need help with smoke alarms or battery replacements, just dial 321-1030 for assistance.

Festivals Coming Up!

Now, let’s talk about something fun! You’re invited to celebrate our diverse community with three upcoming festivals. From September 27-29, we’ll welcome a delegation from Bay Bulls, Newfoundland, our Sister City. This event is part of the SCETV documentary “Towns in Tune.” Then, on Monday, September 23, join Newberry College at The Quad for a vibrant celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month featuring a mariachi band and delicious food trucks. Finally, don’t miss out on one of the best festivals in South Carolina, Newberry’s Oktoberfest, happening on October 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.!

Interesting Trivia

Finally, let’s close with some trivia—did you know Newberry County touches seven neighboring counties, making it one of the regions in South Carolina with the most connections? Former Representative Walt McLeod highlights that Orangeburg County leads with eight counties. Can you name all seven? No pressure; it’s just a fun challenge!

As we welcome the beautiful season of fall, let’s all take a moment to enjoy the warmth of our community. Thank you for supporting the 100+ stores and businesses right here in Newberry. Wishing you all a wonderful fall season!
