Laurens County is buzzing with excitement as the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) kicks off its popular Christmas for Kids program once again. This heartwarming initiative is designed to support families in need during the festive season by providing gifts for children. If you’re interested, applications are now available at the sheriff’s office!
The Christmas for Kids program has been around for quite some time, but it got a fresh start when Sheriff Don Reynolds took over the role in 2017. His enthusiasm for the cause has led to some thoughtful changes to ensure that the program works as effectively as possible. “Sheriff Reynolds loved the idea but we weren’t going to do it any other way than this way,” says Courtney Snow, the Public Information Officer for LCSO. “Residents fill out an application and they have to gather some additional documents showing income, additional benefits they are receiving, and things like that.”
This year, the application process is quite thorough. Families not only apply but also take part in an interview process with the sheriff’s office staff. This two-part approach is all about making sure that those truly in need are helped, while also getting to know each family better. “Someone has to really want the assistance. We don’t make it easy for people who want to shop around,” Snow explained. She reiterated just how much pride LCSO takes in the program, ensuring they make Christmas morning special for every child in Laurens County.
In 2023 alone, LCSO helped nearly 300 families, gathering information about every child’s sizing, desires, and interests. Snow emphasizes that “we’re not just giving out toys.” The goal is to really understand each family and to ensure that **every child gets a Christmas** they deserve.
Looking ahead, LCSO engages in fundraising all year long, with both individuals and local businesses stepping up to support the Christmas for Kids initiative. Organizations like the American Legion Post 25 also get involved, organizing toy runs and placing collection boxes at various locations throughout the county. Starting this week, you can find collection boxes in every Dollar Store, at Big Air Laurens, at the Legion, and several other spots where you can drop off a new, unwrapped gift to donate.
As early December rolls around, LCSO holds a large shopping event with volunteers and staff coming together for the day. “It’s a fun day, and we appreciate the Laurens Walmart for all they do,” shared Snow. After shopping, everything is brought back to the office where it’s sorted and packed up, ready for distribution.
The entire process wraps up by the second week of December, but that’s not the end of it! Snow added that they often find themselves responding to special circumstances even after the event officially ends. “I’m on call on Christmas Eve. We have emergency situations. Families that thought they could do it and realize they really can’t or an apartment fire that destroys everything,” she said.
She recounted a particularly touching story from last year involving a grandmother battling a brain tumor who was also taking care of her grandchildren. It’s situations like these that really drive home the importance of their work. “We went all out for the family, and it means a lot to us for God to send us those situations,” Snow mentioned.
If you know a family that could use a bit of extra love this holiday season, applications are available at the Sheriff’s Office until November 29. The toy drive is beginning this week, and financial donations can be made onsite or online via Venmo @LaurensCountySheriff. Just be sure to specify those funds are for Christmas for Kids.
With the community’s help, this year promises to bring smiles and joy to many children in Laurens County. Let’s spread that holiday cheer!
