Clinton is buzzing with mixed emotions this week as we prepare to bid farewell to Chief Sonny Ledda, who will officially retire from his role as Chief of Police on October 4, 2024. After a remarkable career spanning over 25 years in law enforcement, Chief Ledda is hanging up his badge, and it’s certainly a big moment for the community.
Chief Ledda joined the City of Clinton police force back in 1999 and, after a brief exit in 2012, he returned in 2018, this time taking the reins as Chief. His career has included stops as Police Chief in both Bishopville and Laurens, showcasing a collective experience that has shaped his dedication to community safety and public service.
In a heartfelt statement, Chief Ledda expressed, “It has been the honor of my professional life to serve friends, family, and the community of Clinton.” His enthusiasm for law enforcement and community service has been clear throughout his career, as he’s dedicated countless hours not only to his official duties but also to local organizations like Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, and the Boy Scouts of America.
Ledda’s resume is impressive; he’s attended numerous specialized training programs including the SC Fire Academy, Narcotics Commander School, and even had the opportunity to study at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. His commitment to furthering his education in law enforcement is just one example of how dedicated he has been to making a difference in the city he loves.
The Chief expressed sincere gratitude for the support he received from friends, family, and coworkers during his journey. “I am grateful to my friends, family, and coworkers that have supported me in this 25-year journey of law enforcement,” he said. This acknowledgment highlights his understanding that a successful career in law enforcement extends beyond official duties and includes building strong community ties.
While Chief Ledda didn’t reveal much about his plans post-retirement, he hinted that this isn’t the end of his community service. “I am looking forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Laurens County,” he mentioned. Notably, grateful for his time under the leadership of Chief Barker and Mayor Myra Nichols, he emphasized how the city has molded him into a better officer and person. This dedication goes beyond his official role; it reflects a lifetime commitment to service.
As we celebrate Chief Ledda’s incredible contribution to our community, it’s worth remembering his favorite quote: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” from Martin Luther King Jr. This truly encapsulates his philosophy and reflects the essence of his work in law enforcement.
As Clinton prepares for this transition, we know that Chief Ledda’s presence will be greatly missed but his legacy of community service and safety will undoubtedly carry on. Let’s take this time to appreciate all that he has done and wish him all the best in his new adventures. After all, while he may be retiring from his police duties, his heart for service suggests that this isn’t goodbye, but rather a new beginning. Thank you, Chief Ledda, for your unwavering commitment to our beloved city!
