Celebrating Heroes: Laurens County Honors Its First Responders at Annual Hall of Heroes Event

Celebrating Heroes: Laurens County Honors Its First Responders

In the heart of Laurens County, a wonderful event took place last weekend that brought together families and first responders in a beautiful celebration of dedication and bravery. The second annual Hall of Heroes program, hosted by the Laurens County Hall of Heroes, served as a platform to honor those who have valiantly served the community through the Fire, Police, EMS, and Dispatch departments. The timing of the event was particularly poignant as it coincided with National First Responder Day, which was celebrated on October 28.

A Rich Tradition of Honor

“We’ve been running the Hall of Heroes for 19 years, and a couple of years ago, we felt it was important to expand our focus to include first responders in the community,” shared Morris Madden, Chairman of the Hall of Heroes Board. The program requires department leaders from across Laurens County to nominate individuals from the past who embodied the spirit of service and sacrifice.

Each year, they choose three representatives from law enforcement, fire services, EMS, and dispatch, ensuring that a total of 13 individuals are honored—the twelve plus the recently fallen Clinton firefighter, Michael Vinson. This year’s ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to those individuals who answered the call in the line of duty.

Recognizing the Best of the Best

The individuals honored at the First Responders ceremony can be either active or retired, but as the program is still growing, there’s a strong emphasis on recognizing those who have served their community with integrity for at least three years. “We’re hoping to shine a light on those who have a significant history with our county,” Madden mentioned. He also expressed that while they have recognized historic figures from the area in the past, more active members of the community will likely be honored in the coming years, many of whom continue to volunteer today.

Family members of honorees were invited to the ceremony to celebrate alongside their loved ones, and two distinct plaques were displayed in the rotunda of the Laurens County Courthouse—one dedicated to those who lost their lives while serving, and another for those inducted this year.

A Vision for the Future

The Hall of Heroes has much more planned for the future. “Our ultimate goal is to create a first responders memorial park“, Madden revealed. He envisions a space similar to the newly completed veterans’ park that serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those serving the community.

Bravery in Action

The dedication of first responders was never clearer than in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, where these brave individuals jumped straight into action to assist those affected. They faced overwhelming challenges, from managing emergency calls to addressing power outages and clearing debris.

“We had sheriff’s deputies driving around with chainsaws helping clear roads even when their own families were affected,” Madden recalled with admiration. “It’s outstanding what they do for their community, and it’s moments like these that remind us why we hold this ceremony.” The event truly becomes a testament to the bond shared amongst first responders, who often share light-hearted banter over donuts and spaghetti dinners, but come together as one unified force when the going gets tough.

“We’re a family,” Madden emphasized. “When the going gets rough, we stand side by side, and that’s precisely what this ceremony symbolizes. It’s one big first responder family working for the common good of our citizens, and it’s inspiring to witness.”

Honorees of the Year

This year, beyond the beloved firefighter Michael “Mike Mike” Vinson, the following heroes were recognized at the ceremony: Lt. Ronald Keith “KB” Barrett, Lt. Willie Brown, Dispatcher and Detention Officer Betty Campbell Wallenzine, Station Chief John Holmgreen, EMT Tony F. Osborne Sr., Paramedic Mike Threatt, Chief James Barrett, Captain Joe Robert Koon Jr., Captain Paul Mode, Asst. Chief Wilgus Fortney, Chief Carl Bernard “Buddy” Swanson Jr., and Asst. Chief Donny Ward.

As the event wrapped up, the incredible sense of community and gratitude remained palpable among attendees, reminding everyone present just how important it is to recognize and honor those who selflessly serve Laurens County each day. Here’s to many more years of celebration and remembrance for our ever-dedicated first responders!
