Broward Education Foundation Honors Exceptional Athletes at 2024 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Broward County Celebrates Sports Legends with Hall of Fame Induction

Hollywood, FL – On a memorable evening at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, the 2024 Broward County Sports Hall of Fame welcomed seven outstanding athletes and coaches into its prestigious ranks. The event included a cocktail reception, dinner, and heartfelt tributes, all masterfully hosted by WSVN sports anchor Josh Moser.

The inductees include:

  • Elliot Bonner: A respected football and baseball coach with over 50 years of service, Bonner has influenced countless young athletes in Broward County, fostering sports at schools like Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
  • Darius Butler: This former NFL cornerback and safety dazzled crowds during his time at Coral Springs Charter School and later went on to enjoy a successful nine-year NFL career.
  • Abbas Karimi: A paralympic swimmer and refugee from Afghanistan, Karimi earned two silver medals for Team USA and is known for his remarkable story of resilience.
  • Diana Nyad: An incredible long-distance swimmer, Nyad is celebrated for becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida, showcasing the power of determination.
  • Steve Shapiro: The beloved former sportscaster left a lasting mark on the South Florida sports scene during his more than three-decade career.
  • Lexi Thompson: This professional golfer is a two-time Olympian and three-time major winner, known for her philanthropic efforts to support young women in golf.
  • Hollywood Hills High School 1973 4A State Championship Football Team: This groundbreaking team overcame social challenges to become Broward County’s first football state champions.

James A. Knapp, President and CEO of the Broward Education Foundation, praised the inductees for their remarkable contributions, stating, “Their legacy serves as an inspiration to both our students and the broader community.” This year’s event marks a revival for the Hall of Fame, which had been on hiatus for six years.

The inductees will be immortalized on the Hall of Fame Honor Wall at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, ensuring their legacies will inspire future generations of athletes.
