In the charming city of Greenwood, a new scholarship has been established at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) to honor the memory of an inspiring young graduate, Briana J. Carruth. Known for her unwavering spirit and passion for helping others, Briana’s legacy will carry on through the Briana J. Carruth Memorial Scholarship, aimed specifically at students enrolled in PTC’s Criminal Justice program.
Briana’s journey began in the fall of 2018 when she embarked on her studies at PTC after graduating from Greenwood High School. With dreams of becoming a victim’s advocate, she dedicated herself to learning how to support others during their toughest moments. Sadly, life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, in February 2021.
Despite the challenges thrown her way, Briana displayed remarkable determination. Following a surgery that resulted in the amputation of her right leg below the knee, she made a brave decision to return to her studies in the fall of 2021, even as her battle with cancer continued. Her tenacity shone through as she completed her associate degree in Criminal Justice while enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy.
Her dedication did not go unnoticed. The faculty of PTC’s Criminal Justice Program recognized her exceptional achievement and awarded her the prestigious Top Distinguished Student Award posthumously. Briana’s story of resilience and determination serves as a powerful reminder to all of us about the importance of pursuing our dreams, no matter the obstacles.
The Briana J. Carruth Memorial Scholarship is not just a way to honor a cherished individual; it also aims to support future students pursuing their own dreams through the Criminal Justice program at PTC. The scholarship will take into account academic achievement and financial need, ensuring that deserving students have the opportunity to thrive in their educational journeys.
Brandi Carruth, Briana’s mother, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the establishment of this scholarship. She hopes it becomes a beacon of hope for students who, like her daughter, are determined to make a difference in the world. The scholarship stands as a testament to Briana’s indomitable spirit and her desire to help others.
In the beautiful city of Greenwood, Briana’s spirit lives on, inspiring countless individuals to dream big and chase those dreams fearlessly.
